But after reading more about this , I think I’m going to just not get the 2012
Use a VM on the m4 like parallels (I’ve used this before) or something else.
Run the VPN+torrents in the VM, that shouldn’t interfere with plex
I hope
This will work fine, I've been doing the same since the M4 Mini launched (but using UTM instead of Parallels ... I'll save my Parallels licenses for things that actually benefit from them)

Why not just share the screen and copy and Paste? I do it all the time with my Wife's MX 2 Studio. I drop them in what ever folder I want. Even to external drives that are mounted on her desktop.

I am not an expert but this works really well for me.

Using VM is what I do. You can run VM with vpn and have a choice of OSes to run. If you do not want to pay for Parallels, which has nice integration I have tested and used for some time VMwave Fusion. Free at this time and works quite well. No Coherence as in parallels, but no cost. Have VMs with Windows and Linux and can do what I want with them withotu impacting the mini. Beefed up mini M4 to 24GB RAM and it is working shockingly well.
The advantage is that there is no file transfer. VM is mounting external SSD where all data are saved and both Mac and VM sees the same location with the same (=fast) speed.

In the end, it is actually simpler and very power efficient.

Mac mini 2012 supports Target Disk Mode. Network setup may not be necessary. Connect 2012 to M4 with Thunderbolt 2 cable and Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. You can find both of these on eBay for under $20 each.
Target Disk Mode is the perfect solution. You will get the fastest transfer speed using this method; network connection can introduce overhead bandwidth limitations and reduce transfer speeds. Use Target Disk Mode.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions

What I ended up doing was getting a 2018 mini over a 2012 , because the 2012 mini plus the Apple Thunderbolt adapter together was the same price as the 2018 mini

Then I connected both minis 2018 and m4 together via a Thunderbolt cable , I followed this guide

And I bought a usb kvm switch for $15 that lets me use my wired keyboard and mouse on 2 computers, with a button press

Everything is working perfectly

I’m still not sure if this was the best way or the fastest way to, but is working great so I’m happy

One last question on this

I noticed there are 2 options to choose from smb and afp
Is one better than the other
The default was smb
For sharing between 2 Mac’s with thunderbolt cable

I am definitely not the correct person to ask about this, so hopefully someone replies with a better answer, but I think SMB is the right way to go. I think that afp was an apple networking protocol that they might be moving away fomr going forward.

One thing I noticed
Both Mac minis are connected to hdmi switch
I have both set to monitor sleep after 10 minutes and require password after 5/10 minutes I don’t remember

And both computers are on 24/7

But only the active hdmi Mac. Requires a password when I return to it
When I switch to the other computer after a few hours
Is just on , no password required

Only the active HDMI Mac requires a password

I hope I made that clear
How can I make both Mac’s require a password after the monitor sleeps ? , not just the active HDMI

I don’t want to logout manually cause that ends running apps correct ?
