iOS Transfer data through USB

Is there any way (apart from joining the made for iPod program of jailbreaking) of send/recieve data to an iPad through USB??

For what I´ve read, I think there is no way to do that, but I would appreciate if some of you can confirm that.

AFAIK, MFi or jailbreak are your only two options.

I´ve been asked at university to research that information and after some time looking and finding no answer I decided to ask you guys.

Do you know any website with information to start developing with a jailbroken iPad?
