iPhone transfer phone data from 3g to 3gs

3g is running iOS 3 I think and I'm upgrading a friends to a 3GS with iOS 6.0.1 - how do I get the contacts off the 3g as there is no icloud in iOS
3 !!!

- plug it in to itunes? But the contacts are not my contacts so don't want to erase or mess with my contacts?

Create another user and do it with iTunes on that account?
