So I just got my new iPP 2020 and I, of course, wish to transfer my data (contacts, ebooks, etc.) from my old iPad 2 to my new iPP. I backed up my old iPad to my Mac Mini 2018 as per instructions on how to do so with iTunes. So far so good.

However, when I plugged in my new iPP to the Mini, I got a notice that my software was not up to date and I needed to update it. I'm running Mojave OS 10.14.6, BTW, as I need to still be able to access and use my Adobe CS5. However Software Update indicates that the only software to update to is Catalina! (I recently ran the security update for Mojave the other week.)

Do I truly need to update to Catalina to finish the data transfer to the new iPP? That seems wrong, and I've not seen any mention of that anywhere. There are non-Apple data transfer apps out there, including a free EaseUS MobiMover, but I am not sure about such apps.

Anyone run into this or have advice on it? Thanks!

You might have to do it in macOS Catalina because they moved the data transfer process to Finder.

Hmm, the system requirements seem to suggest that iTunes on Mojave should sync it: https://www.apple.com/uk/ipad-pro/specs/

Is iTunes definitely up-to-date?
The iTunes app on my Mac Mini with Mojave is v. 12.9.5.5.

My iPad 2 has iOS 10.3.3 (which is the top version that it will update to), but it replaced iTunes with Music some time ago, so it seemingly doesn't have iTunes on it. (However, that didn't stop the iPad 2's data from getting backed up to the Mac Mini.)

I've not gotten far enough into the set up of the new iPP to see the desktop with apps on it yet, but I assume it also has Music instead of iTunes on it.

Yes iTunes is a Mac app, don’t think it’s ever been on the iPad apart from the iTunes Store which doesn’t have anything to do with syncing.

You could try this to force iTunes on Mojave to download a supplementary update to support iPadOS 13.

On your Mac, in Finder’s menu bar click Go > Go to Folder and navigate to here:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resources

Unlock your new iPad and connect it to your Mac via USB. Double click on MobileDeviceUpdater in the folder that has opened. It should notify you of a software update. Install it and iTunes should hopefully recognise your device.

The iPad 2 can only update to iOS 9. You likely have an iPad 4 (which can be updated up to iOS 10).

Thanks. I've now done all that and it brings up this window on my monitor. What gives me pause is that I don't know whether hitting that install button will start installing Catalina or update the supplementary update to support iPadOS 13.

I hesitate to push that install button until I know for sure which will happen! Screen Shot 2020-04-04 at 8.39.17 AM.png

iPad 2 and 3 only went up to iOS 9. Did you mean the iPad 4 (old style body with Lightning connector)?

Have you considered doing iCloud backup and restore instead? With the App Store gone from iTunes, they're not much different now and it seems to me there's less crud on the iCloud restore compared to the iTunes one.

$0.99-2.99 for 50-200GB storage so you could do the iCloud backup is a small price to pay if you need to avoid upgrading your Mac Mini to Catalina. Then just cancel the plan when you're done.

You may be right that it is an iPad 4, FWIW. It does have the Lightning port.

Call me superstitious, but I stay clear of iCloud as much as possible, partly because I don't quite "get it". That said, my iPhone backs up automatically to iCloud and I think iCloud was accessed when I switched over from my iPhone 7 to iPhone 11 and used Quick Start.

But since I am one Install button push away from possibly making cambrookpro's suggestion work, I'd like to get the Install question cleared up before I wade into the iCloud solution as plan B.

Thanks for you input, in any case.

For the record and for anyone facing a similar situation, I went ahead and hit the Install button and it installed an update to iTunes on my Mac Mini which did allow it to recognize the iPP! So, I still have Mojave 10.4.6 on my Mac and the new iPP up and running.

My sincere thanks to Automatic Apple, cambookpro, and rui no ono for their suggestions and help. This is why I love MacRumors; the members here are the best.

Was just about to say I think it's safe to press install! Glad you have everything working. Enjoy your new iPad.
