I am planning on transferring my itunes media (around 80GB) from my 2008 MBP to my new rMBP using an Ethernet cable.

First is this the best way to transfer itunes data?

&

Second, how long would this take on average? (I know bandwidth and other factors can influence these number but just an average)

If you have an external hard drive or the means to borrow/purchase one I think that would be an easier solution. You can drag and drop your iTunes library onto the drive and once it's done transferring it should be a very easy drag and drop to your Retina MBP.
