I have a MacBook Pro that I back up the data on my current iPhone 4s. Could it be as simple as connecting the new iPhone to the Mac and clicking on 'restore backup' in iTunes to transfer my data to the new phone?

I just installed macOS Sierra so everything is up to date on the Mac.

Thanks.

Yes, it is that simple. If you want passwords saved, encrypt the iPhone 4s backup. Since there is much more screen real estate on the iPhone 7 Plus, you will have to move some App icons on the new iPhone.

I have never backed up my phone. Just curious as to what you gain?
Here's what I do.
1) Old phone: Erase All Content and Settings
2) New phone: Setup as New phone, log into my iCloud account, add an extraneous email account. Go to app store and download purchased apps. Everything comes back except old text messages.

I was hoping you would say that. Thanks so much!

Thanks. I try not to use iCloud but I do like having a back up at my fingers tips on the Mac. I'll be keeping the 4s and using some of the apps on there at times too.

I backup on the cloud and do hard encrypted backups on iTunes. Have had the cloud do a crappy restore for sure. My stuff is too important to me. I also want all of my texts from my customers.

I always use iTunes to restore a brand new phone and never had a problem, but everyone has choices

Thanks for your reply. I'm so glad it will be so easy. My daughter said she had a horrible time but just recently realized she doesn't use Apple but still has a PC. So I've been wanting to ask if iTunes is available on the PC.

Yes. Just get her to download iTunes for Windows. Then back up her 4S making sure she has the "encrypted" check to ON. Then you can plug in the new iPhone and use that to restore it with.

If she is not updating her 4S she might have to update the 4S to the latest OS.

That's great! Thanks again! And ahem, I suspect my dog could give your cat a run for his money :D
