My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and I'm looking to buy him a new Mac (not sure which, though, yet).

Please, I'd like to transfer his files onto his new computer. Most of them are in Word 5.1 (he has a Mac IIci that is running System 7.1).

I plan to install NeoOffice on the new Mac. When I transfer the files, should I keep them as Word files? Or, convert them to rich-text format ones?

Right now, I'm saving them as rtf and .doc files on my PC using OpenOffice.

Thank you.

wow...that's one old mac he's got. Though if he's using it for simple word processing and not much else, I guess thats fine.

I'm no expert on older mac stuff, but it seems to me that RTF would be the right choice. I don't see WHY MS would make it so 2k8 wouldn't open 5.1 files, but then again this is MS we're talking about here.

A quick google search and about 10-15 minutes of reading indicates that many die hard mac word users on older systems, and those who've gone on to newer and "better" hardware, feel that word 5.1 is the best word processor they've ever used, and when upgrading Office 2008 falls short. Moreover it seems that 2k4 office is better than 2k8.

I don't use either of them. I use pages, in iWork 08 and I think maybe that could be a great option for your boyfriend.
