Transferring PC files to Mac using firewire

I remember reading somewhere that you could connect a Mac and PC using Firewire and transfer files from a PC to a Mac. I can not seem to get this to work, when I connect the two together the PC found new hardware wizard starts but then it does not find a driver.

Any advice would be great, just come back from holiday and have 900 or so pics I need to get onto my iMac from my laptop.

I know you turn your Mac into a hard drive by going into target disk mode. I have never tried this though.

Use a router/ethernet.
It'll be the best way.
