I have a printer driver for my product that works on window xp, vista, 7, and 8
I want to reprogram this from scratch to work on mac os x mtn lion
from what I have been reading I need to develop a printer filter application that will read the postscript/pdf file that is created by the application and create the correct information to go into the output file.

none of the filters I have read about pull vector information out of the file.
I know it can be done as pstoedit that runs on windows can read the ps or pdf file and create an hpgl file.
Where do I find a filter that reads a pdf file that I can start from?

What's the printer?

You will find the best info about community print drivers for OS X here:

There may even be a driver for your printer, or a generic protocol that it uses.
