How to reattach imac 27 inch stand

Okay I transported my 2 imac 27 inch in suitcases on a plane. They way to reattach a imac stand when deattached is this.

Reassembly
1 Align the pin on the
clutch mechanism to
the central hole in the
stand.
2 Replace 8 T10 screws.
3 Place the computer
face down on a table
so that the base of
the stand extends
over the table edge.
Press the stand down
and insert an access
card into the slot
between the top of
the stand and the rear
housing.
4 Insert the access card
as far as it will go.
Gently lift the stand
approximately two
inches to unlock the
clutch mechanism,
and then remove the
access card. The
clutch mechanism
should now be
unlocked.
5 Stand the computer
upright.

Just going through the same issue here. Can't decide what to do.
If it was a 21.5" one, I'd just carry it on the plane, but 27" is damn big.

Do people really think it would work to take the 21.5" iMac without its box on a plane as a carry-on? I'm facing the same question/problem: I live in Hungary, and Apple products are WAY more expensive here (and in Europe in general, though it's a bit less West of here. Here it's roughly 30% more, which is quite painful). I've been trying to figure out how to buy one in the States, and get it back here safely. I wouldn't trust it in the baggage compartment, and I'd pretty much decided that in its box, the 21.5" is just too big to carry on. I hadn't considered carrying it on WITHOUT the box, though. That would indeed bring it within the carry-on restrictions - but would it really be safe? And would the security people let you do this? It's not exactly a laptop....

Any more thoughts/experiences appreciated!

Get the outer dimensions of the box. I took my 17" iMac to Hawaii as a carry on becuase I had to work there for 2 months and didn't have a laptop. Before you say a 17" is smaller than a 27" the box was HUGE. My current 21.5 came in a smaller box.

Are you retarded?

No, really, are you?

Ship it with FedEx or something. I've seen how they handle heavy luggage, they literally throw it onto where it needs to be.

Unless you like having to buy a new iMac every time you go somewhere.

I have this Tenba case:
http://www.tenba.com/products/Trans...se-for-Computer-Equipment.aspx#specifications

I used to transport my 30" cinema display with it, via air travel, quite frequently. I just recently bought the iMac 27", and if you put it in its original box, as it comes from the store, this white box fits perfectly into this case. I've had a 100% success rate checking this on flights, and I've done this for well over 20 flights.

Here's another option, where you put the iMac directly into the case, without the box and foam:

Tenba makes amazingly strong, sturdy, and lightweight cases for photo equipment and computers. The case is 19.2 lbs, the iMac is 30.5 lbs, so you are just under the 50 lb mark (if you pack mouse/trackpad/keyboard separately). You are over the mark for size limitations, but it's not often that they get you on that. They're more often just concerned with the weight.

My case looks as it did when I bought it several years ago. It's awesome, and well worth the money if this is what you do for a living.

Good luck!

ugh.
i actually tried to carry it into the airplane (first class reservation in CX) but it didn't work.
they would not let me do it.

I'm going to have to try again but maybe this time i'll have it wrapped in a box or something, unless first class reservation in JAL is any different...

Thanks everyone for the responses. I decided to go with a pelican case. I am going to try it, and get personal property insurance, which covers applications like this. Will let everyone know how it goes. The weight of the pelican case I got is 35 lbs with foam. The iMac is 30lbs. So full foam intact it still weighs less than 70 lbs. Which is the max for Virgin America and Southwest. Probably going to have to pay for oversize luggage though. But the case can take a serious beating. So we'll see how it handles.
Hi, glad you found solution. What model Pelican case did you buy? I don't see one big enough for the 27" iMac. Do you remove the pedestal? Thank you,

Going to be getting a 27" iMac with the i7 soon. However, I need it to be nice and portable for air travel.

Thats called an oxymoron. A 27" iMac is only ever going to be painful and risky for air travel, never "nice and portable". Once you are into extra seats then I'd seriously consider an rMBP to travel with for content and sort (rent/borrow), an Apple 27" display locally. If you are travelling between the same two points have a screen at each location.

I keep my boxes and that includes my imac. I've done similar things so I literally just mailed it. UPS is going to take far better care (and has better insurance) than the airlines. Just package is in it's original boxing and ship it that way. :)

Hey guys,

What do you recommend for the iMac 27' for checked luggage, price not a problem.

Want something sturdy for travel a couple of times a year, hopefully not overweight so don't have to pay extra, and wheels are definitely a plus.

That luggage seems rather sturdy! Albeit, I'd still be nervous about shipping/traveling with my iMac. I get annoyed at my cats that keep tilting my iMac further than I'd like it, much less traveling with it...

$654.95?? what a ripoff

I didn't make it... but if the OP wants to travel with their expensive iMac, I'd shoot for something that was specifically designed and built to do such a task. Protection plus niche audience = $$$

you could probably just sell it and buy a new one and lose the same amount of money and then also have a better machine by upgrading...

I purchased a Mac Pro when they were first released in 2006 in California, Deer Park I think was the Store, and shipped it back home to Australia after using it for six months by sea, and everything was just fine. I was contemplating buying an Apple 27" Refurbished iMac from OWC before Christmas and air freight was US$182 with insurance.

The Australian Government would have charged me 20%, comprising 10% import duty and 10% GST which is odd seeing I was considering purchasing in the USA. These charges would also have been charged for the freight. Also I needed a Customs Agent to bring it into the country

. Going to be getting a 27" iMac with the i7 soon. However, I need it to be nice and portable for air travel. And the behemoth of a screen is limiting my options. So I am wondering if any brilliant people out there can figure out the best way to transport a 27" iMac on a plane without going over average height and more importantly weight restrictions.
The reason I went with a Mac Mini. I wanted something occasionally transportable, but didn't want a portable to tote day to day. I don't take the monitor; just use what is available where I'm at.
