I have a 17 inch macbook pro from 2009. I am trying to empty the "trash" but it is very slow. It has taken 20 minutes to empty from 25363 to 24869. I am also unclear why it has so many items to delete.

Did you select: secure empty trash?

This writes zeros to the disk, and is slow.

Non secure (regular) simply flags the space on the storage as empty, so the OS will be able to use the space again.

As for so many.....did you put stuff in the trash? If not, you should figure out what it there, why it is there, and if you should in fact delete it.

My 2011 MBP is also painfully slow, secure empty trash or otherwise, and I also see folders with a few things in that say emptying 1000s of files in them. Pretty standard me thinks
