trashcan off dock

is there any possible way to get the trashcan off of the dock?

i'd rather have it on my desktop

I don't think there's any way to do that. I remember that there was an app by the name of Trash X, which allowed you to put it on the desktop but I don't know if it's out there anymore. Try versiontracker.com, it should be there.
