Trashes corrupting files

I'm bummed about going between my new iMac and PC with files via thumbdrive. The Mac creates ghost images of the same file names. When I delete the ghost _._ trashes copies of the files, the original file becomes corrupted. Is there any way to avoid this? I especially have trouble on jpg files, copying from the new iMac to the PC for photo editing.
