I just talked to the apple support (for over an hour) and they said to me it is now just possible to copy music to the watch when you have the apple music subscription...

I also can't copy music to the watch (it is downloaded to my iphone and not in the cloud), the orange circles are just spinning now matter how long I wait.

The automatic downloading of the recent tracks that I've litened too are downloading to the watch but its not possible to do it manually.
I think whomever you spoke to at Apple Support has wrong information. I am able to copy music to the Watch and I don't have a subscription to Apple Music. It is just that the UI in the Watch app is not appropriately showing what music is on the Watch and also not properly showing downloads etc. I'm using the general release version of WatchOS 9.1

Thanks for clarification! I also thought they have wrong information. I was even put through to a superviser. That he doesn't even know that you can copy music to the watch is pretty weak IMHO.

Wow! Even put through to a supervisor! I've generally had really good support from Apple phone/online support and also in-store. Hoping this continues....

It is working now for me after I installed the iOS 16.1.1 Update! Yeah!

For some reason the update did not show up, although I have turned on automatic updates.

Been noticing the same thing. Have to refresh or close settings app to get it to show. I wonder if they're trying to spread it out more vs having people hit it at once. lol.

Nice to hear about 1.1 fixing the music issue - I have friends who don't subscribe to Apple Music.

I am still experiencing the "ghost album" issue on iOS 16.1.1 and watchOS 9.1, and I did a full erase of my Watch. I guess I'm glad I'm not alone?

Experiencing the same issues here, folks. Just updated to watchOS 9.2 and iOS 16.2. Did not fix it. Removed all music from my phone, re-synced music to my phone, re-synced albums to watch... still disappearing. No rhyme or reason I can see.

Frustrating. I even put in a bug report to Apple for this, which I rarely do.

Any changes with 9.3/16.3?

My problem is slightly different than yours. I traditionally only select a single playlist of 1000 songs to be put on the watch (not Ultra btw), but since 9.0 or 9.1 (don't know for sure) it keeps on downloading songs (a lot more than those 1000) until it eventually tells me the watch is full. During the transfer of all those songs the battery drain (both on Watch and iPhone) is enormous. Anybody else experiences this too?

Something else that seems strange to me is when I go into 'Music' in the 'Settings' on the Apple Watch itself (not iPhone), I can't switch of the first option ('add playlist songs' or something like that). When I switch it off and go back, it's switched on again. Are you guys able to switch off the first option? Maybe this causes the problem?

No Apple music BTW, just offline music from my iPhone. Worked perfectly for years, until WatchOS 9...

I got a new phone and of course I didn't unpair before wiping my old phone. So ... had to wipe my Ultra and start fresh. Bugs me because I have a very large workout playlist I like to use when exercising. Usually takes 1-1.5 hours to add this playlist to the watch.

The reset was 2-3x faster than I last remembered (late last year). Also it downloaded all my music 3x faster. Had to have been via wifi because my phone wasn't close to the watch and it downloaded the playlist before I knew it.

Just a note. (16.3.1 iOS / 9.3.1 Watch OS).

First time I've seen that work.

I have major issues with music and aw ultra as well. Even I manage to sync a playlist, after a while it suddenly disappears or songs get greyed out. Syncing iphone and the watch takes ages even in the same wlan and bluetooth connection and what ever else. Deleting playlist on the watch requires apple music subscription - which is bonkers. After apple killed iTunes and replaced it with the music app, music became a pontifical pain in the a...
