tfaz, when you say unbearably slow, do you mean a sync time of ~2 minutes, or is it substantially longer?

Long enough to make breaking out that cable worthwhile.

But, that's my opinion. I think you can tell that the Treo is very popular with many, which is one of the reasons I was so excited to get my hands on one. I guess that maybe I expected too much, but as an Apple user, I suppose we're a little spoiled.

My PC friends love their Treos. But if I had to get something equivalent today, I'd go Blackberry.

I've actually decide to go with the Treo 600.

The 650 just has a lot of stuff I will not use, and the 600 is half the price.

Thanks everyone for the help, though!

Congrats, got a new toy for myself today too. The Treo 650. We'll have to compare notes sometime.

They're two totally different devices. Blackberry is a great email machine. The Treo is not as good at email, but offers a user a huge amount of applications. The Blackberry does one thing very well, the Treo does many things- some very well, some, ehh, not so well..lol...

I don't understand what "tweak" you can use to send/receive instant messages when there's no instant messenger included?

You could be right about instant messaging, I've never done that - even on the computer- but what about verichat? I confused instant messaging for text messaging- what do I know? ;-)

But I'm positive about the email- I use Versamail with my IMAP .Mac address without any problems or extra cash.

i was not too impressed with the treo 600, especially as i needed a reliable phone. i expressed this in a previous 'treo 600 vs 650' post.

Get an extra battery. If the 600 charges all the way down you'll lose all of your data.

i've never had the problem of losing my info, and the battery on my treo is fixed, it can't be removed. the battery lasted about a week with 200mins of calls before it needed a charge.

overall i thought the phone was a total nuscence, and had numerous replacements. a good example of the features being better than the actual phone function, which kinda defeats the purpose!

the treo 650 is meant to be a lot better, building on nearly every weakness of the treo 600, apart from maybe the size and the protruding aerial! When i was due an upgrade i didn't rush into another treo, instead went back to good ole nokia smarts, the 6500 is an excellent phone. the only thing that this doesn't do better than the t600 is web browsing, fair enough, it does bring up exactally the same sites, but the stylus was unmatched for scrolling!

Enjoy your 600, they really are cool little devices once you get the hang of them.

600 battery are not user removable.

iGary, getting the 600 was a mistake. Even with the 650 being double the cost it is well worth it. Have you looked at the sreens side-by-side? The keyboard on the 650 is a big improvement over the 600. I purchased each during the first week of release and I would not own a 600 after using the 650.

Haven't actually made the plunge yet as verizon doesn't have the 650 avilable yet.

I also have to find out if the $100 credit for renewing after two years is avilable.

That 100.00 plus a 50.00 rebate was going to make the 600 a 150.00 phone. If there is a 50.00 rebate on the 650 and that credit, I might consider it. I'm off to the Verizon store tonight to check anyway.

I'll let you all now how it works out. Thanks again for the valuable input.

Oh, that would be a problem too. I wouldn't be comfortable with that, I'd always be worrying about getting caught without a charging option.

So I assume what people are saying is that when the battery goes, you have to plug it in and charge it versus having a spare for the 650, right?

I also assume sthat this means after a couple of years, which is fine by me, that the batttery in the 600 is toast.

Basically, I would have never considered one of these things, but my photography and wiriting business is starting to take off, and it's mainly because of meeting people on the street that see my car signs, or see me taking pics. I'd like to be able to start building a database of addresses and notes, and carrying around one of thes is much easier than pen and paper.

I'd also like to be able to quickly check e-mail, but not at a huge airtime or Internet cost - are they going to charge me separately for checking my e-mail, or is that just airtime?

All said, I'm just trying to manage my time and efficiency better and one of these things seems the best bet since I am due for a new phone.

No clue how Verizon charges. My bottom-line Sprint bill is this...

We have three phones, that share 4500 anytime minutes. From 7pm to 7am is free. Free weekend minutes. Two of these phones have unlimited PCS Vision which is essentially the internet or emailing. The total cost with taxes and bs fees is $215 a month. So obviously, this would be much less if just one phone. I had nextel before this and was paying almost the same with just one phone and no internet.

So your question is for Verizon, how much is the internet. If they charge, I would check with Sprint. I've really enjoyed Sprint and have had no ongoing problems. You may also check ebay for a used 650 or a good deal on a new one.

I've never bought a spare for the 650, however when it has discharged - the memory stays intact. The 600 apparently loses the data till the next hotsync or you would need to sync with your backup data card.

The real reason is the 650 lasts longer than the 600 battery. Buying a 600 is like finding a new G3 PB when you know the G4 PB is out.

That is my thinking in going with the Treo 650. Also the life span of the batteries is expanded since you are not charging the first one all the time.

I also assume sthat this means after a couple of years, which is fine by me, that the batttery in the 600 is toast.

Could be sooner. The batteries have about 200 to 300 charge cycles in them. So anytime you connect the AC, it is a charge cycle - from what I have been told.

I'd also like to be able to quickly check e-mail, but not at a huge airtime or Internet cost - are they going to charge me separately for checking my e-mail, or is that just airtime?

Sounds like Sprint and their unlimited Vision packs would work great for you.

I ended up going with the Treo 600.

It has a year warranty, I got insurance, so if the internal battery dies, I'm covered.

It DOES have a three-day memory battery now, so all of the contacts do not disappear.

It was $150.00 with all the special stuff Verizon gave me for signing up for another two years.

Learning to use this thing is a whole different story.

Congrats!

Though I am still learning my Treo 650 - let me know of any questions.

Also let me know of any good programs that you find for us photographers. Will share what I find too....

My owner's manual said that there was no way to get images off the phone for Macs - Am I missing something. Chip?

Only program I downloaded so far was Mail to Go. ;)

I have a 650 and it syncs the pics in the Pictures folder (in my home folder).

I have a 600 and the manual says: Windows Only under that function.

There must be a work-around to get the images out of there. I'll have to dig.

I've discovered I am going to have to get a belt holder for this and I'm thinking about the Timbuk2 case - any ideas?

Not sure, only have synced photos from the Mac to the Treo so far. I am also using Missing Sync, that may help you.

I got a Tamrac 5664 case that seems to work well, till I get the free leather one (as part of a car kit, case "rebate"). The Tamrac seems to work well, it even allows me a space for my business card case.

I'm also considering this phone or a Sony Ericsson p910. I like the way the treo looks better but i'm apprensive because i had a t5 earlier this year and getting it to sync with the mac (using missing sync) was impossible. I don't know if its easier in tiger though.

I like the treo also cos i can get wifi as an option and i want to use it with verizon. Do they sell the Unlocked CDMA version unbranded? Anyway i need a PDA cell phone that i can sync with ical and address book through isync, that is a must for me.

I've heard a lot of good things about The sony though. Any light anyone can shed on this would be helpful if you know about it.
