...so after 9+ crashes, I removed it. Question is - does the "paid for" version do the same? Or is it only the trial version? TIA

Thanks - soon as I removed the trial version safari stopped the disappearing act. I am hesitant to buy if others were having same problems with paid version as trial...

Mine hasn't crashed Safari, and my only concern is that it runs relatively slow.

Try repairing your disk permissions to see if that stops the crashing. You may also want to try deleting the Pages and Keynote preferences. The trial version should not crash.
I would also try running something like AppleJack or Onyx.

I'm so new to mac that those links scared me! I backed slowly out of those links, and looked into other possibilities - and appear to have fixed it. I reloaded the trial version and then went to utilities and ran "permissions", and found an error that the system then fixed for me. (knock on wood), Safari has not crashed yet - still going hours after loading! I'm a happy camper....:D

And a Big Thank You to MaaseyRacer for the advice!
