I adopted a macbook with a broken screen with intentions of turning it into a media box for my HDTV. For some reason i though i should just remove the screen all together. I followed instructions from ifixit.com and it went very well. So now my concern display properties. I want to totally disable the internal display to take off the as much load off the intel graphics card. From research it seems i didn't need to take off the display at all, just close the lid and wake the computer via USB or Apple Remote.

I want to know how the computer knows the display lid is closed. Magnet? I don't want to put the broken LCD back on the macbook. Thanks

Magnet it is! I found out the hard way by setting one on another and the display went dead.

You should be able to google and find the exact location of the magnet in the MB.

On the MPB it's on the right screen border, somewhere in the middle. The actual magnet is not very large, it shouldn't be hard to find something to substitute for the original lid magnet.

I've been using this for years:

    InsomniaX

Turn it on and you can run it with the lid down. PC's have always been able to do it with no damage so it's annoying we have to rely on tricks or 3rd party apps to do it.

The lid magnets are STRONG! Try sticking a screwdriver on the left or right of the iSight on a Macbook :D

I am sorry but thats not what he is trying to archive,, he wants to do the exact opposite thing! he wants to Run ONLY the External Monitor Not the internal, but the internal is not ON the macbook anymore since he took it off, he needs to make the macbook think that the lid is closed ;) not the direct opposite , insominax is tuning the "isthelidclosed" sensor off !

Also You are able to run a macbook without insominax, just close the lid, and wake it from standby using external mouse /Keyboard, then you can also open the lid again, and the monitor will stay off, but you can use the internal keyboard! So the macbooks DO support that! :apple:

The magnet for sleep mode is located in the top lid on the left hand side, about 1/3 of the way down from the top (when lid is open).

Worked perfectly. After i power on the macbook i place a weak refrigerator magnet on the side of the macbook and wake it via the IR remote. After that the macbook is only powering one display! Now all i have to do is configure Plex. Thanks!
