I tried jailbreaking my friend's iPhone 3gs with new bootrom on 3.1.3 with limera1n. It was not previously jailbroken. Now it's stuck on the Apple Logo screen. Is there any way to get it out without restoring to 4.1?

You can't use limera1n with iPhone OS 3.x.x

So, no there is nothing you can do without restoring. You can restore from a back up, that way, I don't think iTunes will force you onto 4.1? I am unsure about this.

EDIT: I was wrong. Refer to below.

Would I be able to restore to a custom 4.1 firmware with PwnageTool? I read that a new PwnageTool has been released that works with the 3gs new bootrom.

    That's false.
You will either need shshs to restore to anything but official 4.1 or use Pwnage to restore to custom 4.1 so you can unlock.

Will I be able to restore to a custom firmware even if the phone was not previously jailbroken?

Should have just asked whether OP was on a mac or not.

Ah well, yes you can use Pwnage without being JB'd

Yes, pwnage will take care of it.
Or download a custom 4.1 ipsw from the internet and use redsnow on windows to put your iphone in DFU and allow you to restore to the JB 4.1 thru itunes.

i have the exact same problem

please follow me the solution if any

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1038921

this is what i have in mind:

solution 1:trying jailbreaking again with a compatible jailbreak software cause when i put it in dfu mode,i was again able to jailbreak with the limera1n which obviously didn't work but the limera1n screen came on and it was doing a setup like new

solution 2:upgrade to 4.1 which is going to have its own unlock in the next few days, dev team said 2 days after apple releases 4.2

    solution 3:custom firmware
