Tried to update my 3GS, but no sim card detected

iTunes does not recognize the sim card in my phone, yet it works with my backup phone. Also, my installation stops on the activation page.

I click English
Country
Wi-Fi

But when I get to the activation page, it is unable to continue and says the activation server is temporarily unavailable.

Thoughts? My phone has completed previous contracts, so it is unlocked and I have a sim from another phone company.

Thanks in advance, and I am new to this site, so I'd like to apologize in advance if what I'm asking is unclear.
