Recently been mostly just moving a bunch of data around between my computers. So was working with 2x external drives NTFS. One external HFS+ and one external APFS.

All have consistently ejected fine (or told me it was in use by “X”) but more than once I’ve had issues with the APFS drive, which is also Thunderbolt, the Sandisk PRO-G40.

Sometimes it ejects perfectly fine as expected. But at least twice it has given the error but instead of that familiar “in use by X”, I got “because one or more programs are using it”. But even after closing out apps, no go?

I’ve had to solve it by restarting the computer then ejecting it.

Why this generic in use without telling me what’s using it, when other times I am told what’s using it?

And any idea why it seems to be a more common issue with this one drive? Anything I can do to avoid or better manage this?

I've seen this many times, personally I don't worry about it. That dialog should also have a "force eject" button, doesn't it? My guess is that you could probably just click that, but I typically shut down, disconnect the disk and then restart to make sure no data is lost.

Yep quite sure it had a force eject, but given the message was most hesitant to take that route
