Trouble uploading photos. New to mac

Hi,
I have only just moved to a mac a month or so ago and am having some trouble.

The computer does not like me uploading photos on either one of my cameras.. sometimes it works (rarely) but most time it freezes.

On image capture it comes up with 'waiting for device' and will stay like that. On iphoto it searches for them but never finds it, I end up having to force quit it. if i open it in finder they don't appear.

Like i said sometimes it works but only once in a blue moon. It seems like lately it doesn't work at all. and more often then not i have to turn the computer off by pressing and holding the button cos everthing has frozen up. If anyone can help me that would be great!!

If the camera uses a digital media card, you can buy a cheap card reader that works very well and doesn't involve the camera. I have two cameras and find it's much easier to have the card reader instead of having to fool around with camera settings and drivers.
