I just picked up a WD 320gb external hard drive for my G4 MDD. When I plug it in, after about a minute of nothing, it says "this disk is not recogniseable buy this computer" and nothing shows up on the desktop. In the box there's 3 choices, initialize, ignore(i think), and eject. So I went to initialize and when the disk utility comes the drive is listed on the lefthand side but when its selected none of the options are clickable in any of the sub-choices.

Now I met the requirements as stated on the box so i'm not sure what gives?

Any thoughs?

Thanks

And you just got it? that's strange. You're absolutely sure that none of the Disk Utility options are clickable? At the least you should be able to Erase and re-format. If you can't do that, you should probably take it back and get a new one.

It's entirely possible that you have a drive that's DOA. I bought a 1TB WD Green drive that would disappear once the computer went to sleep. Upon the computer waking up, the drive was gone till I rebooted. The drive failed a month later. None of the options appeared just as you state on yours.

I would exchange that drive and then see what happens with the new one.

yea... I figured I would prob. return it. Does WD generally have reliable products (this was the first WD product I've ever bought)? Are there other brands that are more mac friendly that I should consider?

Thanks for the responses.
