The downside to using TrueCrypt on the Mac is that it requires the use of an account with Administrator privileges to create and mount encrypted volumes.

This is not true. I dont use a admin account for my daily use and I am able to create and mount TC volumes.

Have you tried this out or did you read this somewhere?

Administrator privileges required on OS X

It does not do this when I log in with ad account that has Administrator privileges.

The downside to using TrueCrypt on the Mac is that it requires the use of an account with Administrator privileges to create and mount encrypted volumes. As a general security mitigation rule I do not use accounts with Administrator privileges for day to day work. I use Administrator as it was meant to be used; to make changes to the system.

It is true. it doesn't work on my limited user account as well. Only the administrator account. It goes through the process of creating the volume but then it asks for "administrator privileges" typing the admin or the user password does nothing.

Ive never had that problem. My daily account is a "Standard" account.

EDIT:

I just tried this out again. Created a new TC container and mounted it under a Standard account, no problems.

What version of Truecrypt are you using?

What version of OSX?

Where are you saving the TC container? If its somewhere an admin can only access, that may be your problem.

there is only one truecrypt version available for mac so I am using that(6.1a)

OSX-10.5.6

I am saving the container in my documents folder. I also tried my desktop.

again, it goes through the process of creating it(I can see the file it creates) but once it gives me the prompt(screen capture below) It will delete it once I hit cancel. Which I have to do because no matter what password I give it(admin, user), it says it's wrong.

Are you logged in as an admin?
I suspect if you aren't, then even entering an admin password won't work since it's not tied to any user other than the current user?

He said he isnt logged in as an admin. I use a "Standard" account day2da and have no problem with TC.

I just created a new user on my Mac, set as a Standard user. Ran Truecrypt, created a 10MB container, mounted it just fine.

Are you running any kind of extra security software?

BTW, the screenshot doesn’t show up, only text.

no extra security software.

It's not the end of the world but if it's working fine on your computer, it now bothers me that I can't do it on mine.

You're not missing much, it's just a screenshot of the password box request for the admin password from TC.

that's pretty much it.

I'll try posting it again.

I see the screenshot now. That’s weird. The password box is not the standard box that pops up on OSX. It usually looks like this

I would be upset to if others have it working.

I just checked my version of TC and its 6.0a. I guess I better upgrade, hopefully it doesn’t cause any issues. Ill let you know.
