LOL. OMG. It checks all the boxes for stroking the guy's ego:
1. His Name is on it even though he really has nothing to do with it.
2. Contains Gold.
3. Says "Made in the USA"
4. Has a cool backstory he can tell people when he points at it: Designed by former Marine.
5. Was presented in a very public way which makes him feel important.

Tim Cook became CEO of Apple in part because of how ruthlessly he controlled costs as COO. He knows this little stunt will keep Apple off Trump's Tariff radar for at least 6 months.
There is an argument somewhere that during the times of less disruption Tim Cook actually did more for world peace than any other person by acting as the bulwark between the US and China to maintain their supply chain and prevent an invasion of Taiwan.

What I see now though is a company twice now bending the knee to authoritarian governments and fighting democratic ones to stamp down on consumer rights.

It's one thing to quietly say you'll open a factory in the USA coincidentally after the current term finishes to avoid tariffs and another to publicly massage an ego.

Anyone with an IQ more than my thermostat would’ve seen right through that. But unfortunately:rolleyes:

Sure. That would mean they're building something with them, making them except from the tariff.

Edit: Sorry I quoted the wrong comment!
It means the price of electronics, TV will have two tariffs. One on the product and a second on the chips. Make the chips here, assemble the TV elsewhere the chip tariff goes away. All tariffs go away assemble the TV and make the chips here.

Simple fix from the consumer side. Stop all ‘want it’ discretionary buying. A good year of us all buying needed only goods and services should make a big statement. Not to mention our new positive financial position. We have a very strong position, all we need to do is use it.
Wonderful idea. We will gladly welcome people over to the fiscally conservative side.

Should always be a physical conservative side when it comes to budgets. Not political, good sound dinner table economics.

Now it all makes sense

I’m confused. What if the product isn’t built here? Is there a 100% tax on the product… or only if you are building the product in the US and import the chip…

i am done being an expert on the legal system, american elections, vaccines, wars in eastern europe and middle east, and government spending... i am now an expert on tariffs, and here are top five things you must absolutely know:

Seems to me this will hurt small companies a lot as they can not just build up manufacturing in the US. That means you can have a group of top designers and engineers working and paying taxes in the USA developing a killer product, but that doesn't count because you need to manufacture it in China, Taiwan or somewhere to have a product at a reasonable price to enter the market. This makes it much harder for smaller companies to compete with the big dogs as you start with higher chip prices due to lower volume purchases, you get the good chips later than the big companies and now you have to pay 100% tariffs on top.
Soap box: This is the problem that I have with the Trump economy. They give preferential treatment to certain types of work and subsidize it and disadvantage other types of work they don't care about. Not a free and fair economy for all, just another version of subsidizing what you think is your voter base. Btw, Dems do the same.

U.S. President Donald Trump today said that there will be a 100 percent tariff on chips and semiconductors imported into the United States, but with a major exception.

m2-macbook-air-blue.jpeg

Companies that are building in the United States, or that have made a commitment to build in the U.S., will not have to pay the tariffs. Since Apple pledged to spend $600 billion on U.S. manufacturing, the company will presumably be exempted from the planned chip tariffs.

"If you're building in the United States, or made a commitment to build or are in the process, there's no charge," Trump said. He added that if companies promise to bring manufacturing to the U.S. and don't follow through, tariffs will be "added up" and "charged at a later date."

The Trump administration exempted semiconductors and derivative products like the iPhone from reciprocal tariffs in countries like China and India, but Trump has been promising to levy high fees on chip imports.

Apple sources its chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), and there were fears that chip tariffs could have a significant impact on Apple's costs as a result. For now, it looks like Apple is going to avoid any additional tariffs on the chips that it uses for its devices. Trump made the announcement during a White House press event with Apple CEO Tim Cook, where Cook announced an additional U.S. manufacturing investment. There is no word on when semiconductor tariffs will be put in place.

And the pump and dump continues

Finally tech companies will definitely absolutely, undoubtedly make US chips, phones, and devices using American workers and there’s no way it’s just going to be robotic manufacturing within 30 years.

This is just chaos. Nobody can plan business activity with daily tariff changes based on a Magic 8 Ball.
I've noticed that he makes a deal and then gives time for the deal to actually happen. When it doesn't, he doesn't do like our politicians for the last 50 years have done...he doesn't do NOTHING. He goes back to the stick.

"Planning business activity" is more difficult, yes. But it's virtually impossible to do when you have leaders tell the President they're going to do something, only to renege a couple months later.

Under Clinton, Obama, HW Bush, W Bush, and even Trump 1.0, other leaders would SAY the things we wanted to hear, but then would not actually follow through.

Trump 2.0 is simply doing what any good businessman, statesman, or just plain leader SHOULD do. As Reagan once said, "Trust. But follow up."

He's just following up. And it needs to be done.
So, is this on top of the other tariffs or what? I can’t keep track of all of this.
Who told you that YOU have to keep track? Sheesh, relax. I give it a week, and there'll be a new deal.
just a reminder he doesn’t have the power to do this, if Congress did its job this wouldn’t be happening.
Just a reminder...he does have the power to do this. If he doesn't, then the rest of the world just goes back to ripping off America. I sure don't want that.
Making us work for $12/hr while prices go up. Awesome!

And firing all women to make sure men can "do whatever men do" when they want to.
Capitalism, for it to be real, requires both sides of a transaction to believe that they are benefiting from the transaction.

If you're not, then you've made a mistake somewhere along the line. You can probably still correct it, but you need to admit that maybe you did make a mistake, keeping your skills at a $12/hour level, for example.

And you're going to have to give me an example where he is "firing all women". You can have your opinions, but you can't tell untruths.
Get out your checkbook folks,
this is going to cost you a lot of money.
I doubt that. Tariffs, when used as a behavior modification tool, can actually have a corrective action long term. I say calm down and put your seat belt on. We'll let you know when the ride comes to a complete stop.
