I connected my updated iPhone 6S to my older MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), running Catalina, ver 10.15.7.

The phone showed "trust this computer", and it keeps flashing.

On my MBA, it said it had to download something. I think it did. It went away. The phone keeps flashing the message.

I rebooted both, and tried different cables. Same thing.

Anyone heard of this?

it's flashing, that is, it shows for 1 second, then gone for a second, then back and forth.
I know what it means, I've seen it before, but not like this.
It doesn't stay on long enough for me to tap 'trust', and if I do, it still keeps showing and disappearing, back and forth.

Could it be the connection on one of the devices? If that is slightly loose it might connect/disconnect and so causes the message to flash on screen.
