Thanks for the reply, and especially the link. I called the company that had the $114 price tag and asked if that comes in an unopened box. They asked me to hold and then came back saying that they no longer carry that product. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Do you qualify for an Education purchase? Applecare for the iMac is only $119 directly from Apple in the Edu store.

The Big Answer

YES I AM BRAND NEW TO THIS FORUM SO YOU DON'T NEED TO POINT IT OUT. I AM A LONG TIME READER BUT NEVER FELT THE NEED TO POST UNTIL NOW
I know this is a long story but your lazy if you do not read through. This should be stickied for all to see because this is the answer to buying on eBay.

Preface:
I bought my first mac February 2009. I purchased an Applecare Protection Plan from eBay because it was cheaper than buying from Apple. I got just the registration code emailed to me. I registered with Apple and it shows that I was covered with no problem to this very day.
I went the entire year with no problems and never had to use the APP.

Current Status:
I loved my iMac so much that I could not stand going on vacations and on trips having to use my wife's HP windows based laptop.
I decided that I was going to buy myself a Macbook Pro.
On March 7th 2010. I went to Best Buy and bought it.
I also bought the Applecare for the Macbook Pro on eBay that night and it registered with Apple without a problem showing my Macbook as covered.
On March 7th 2010 I listed my iMac on eBay for $900 and advertised it being covered with the Applecare Protection Plan till February 5, 2012.
I previously read the Applecare Transfer info which are as follows:
6. Transfer of Plan
Subject to the restrictions set forth below, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your rights under the Plan to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include the original Proof of Purchase, the Plan's Certificate and all of the Plan's packaging material, including printed materials and these Terms and Conditions; (b) you notify Apple of the transfer by sending, faxing or e-mailing notice of transfer to Apple Inc., ATTN: Agreement Administration, MS: 217AC, 2511 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95758, U.S., fax number 916-399-7337 or agmts_transfer@apple.com, respectively; and (c) the party receiving the Plan reads and agrees to accept the Terms and Conditions of the Plan. When notifying Apple of the transfer of the Plan, you must provide the Plan Agreement Number, the serial numbers of the Covered Equipment being transferred and the name, address, telephone number and email address of the new owner.

The Problem:
On March 9th the iMac sold.
I asked the new owner for her information and I emailed it to Apple.
The response that I got back from Apple was this:
Thank you for sending the documentation regarding the transfer of your AppleCare support agreement.

To complete your transfer request, we need the proof of purchase for your AppleCare support agreement.

For further assistance with this issue, please scan and attach your proof of replacement/exchange issued by the reseller to an email and send it to agmts_transfer@apple.com. If you prefer, you may fax the proof of purchase to 1-916-399-7337, ATTN: APP DOP. Please be sure to write the Case or Repair ID listed above in the email subject line or fax cover sheet.

Sincerely,

AppleCare Agreement Administration

I replied back and attached the invoice receipt from the eBay seller and I got this response from Apple:

Thank you for sending your product's proof of purchase to Apple.

Apple has reviewed your proof of purchase and your request to update the purchase date in our records. Your request was carefully considered. We regret to inform you that your request has been denied.

Your request was denied because the receipt does not reflect the original retail purchase. Apple does not accept a receipt from a non-Apple authorized reseller.

Sincerely,

AppleCare Agreement Administration

So I replied back saying how am I suppose to transfer this over to this person I do not know and I got this as a response:

Thank you for sending documentation regarding your Apple product/warranty.

The documentation you sent, however, is not sufficient for us to process the request.

For further assistance with this issue, please call AppleCare Agreement Administration at (800) 275-2273 and provide the case number above.

Sincerely,

AppleCare Agreement Administration

So now I called and this is what they told me:
eBay is an un-authorized Apple reseller. Apple does not honor Applecare Protection Plans that are purchased not purchased from an Authorized Apple reseller. Then guess what they did! They expired my Applecare Protection Plans for the iMac and my new Macbook Pro because I could not produce a receipt from an Authorized Apple Reseller

I was faced with having to tell the buyer that the iMac was false covered.

Since I only bought the Macbook Pro Plan a couple days earlier I emailed the seller a screen shot of my Agreement page showing that it was expired. He emailed me back that he has never heard of this before but was gracious enough to give me a full refund.

What I do not understand is why are thousands of these being sold on eBay if it unauthorized and I realize that there are many many many people who are going to be screwed one of these days while many other just might get lucky.

The Apple genius that I talked with on the phone didn't have many answers for me as to why are these being allowed to be sold if it's illegal.

So there is the answer. Any Apple product that is not purchased from an authorized apple reseller is not honored by Apple.

If you read your Applecare Protection Agreement it states:
This certificate confirms AppleCare Protection Plan coverage for your Apple product(s). Keep this
certificate and the original sales receipts for your Apple product(s) and the AppleCare Protection Plan.
Proof of purchase may be required if there is any question as to the product's eligibility for AppleCare
Protection Plan coverage.

So the problem may exists only when you have to transfer an APP bought on eBay, because you don't have a valid proof of purchase.
But I can assure you that if your Mac eventually get broken, they would repair it under AppleCare. They did twice for me, every time with an eBay AppleCare

No.. IF they ask for proof of purchase and you can't produce a such, your AC will get revoked.

I have seen post about that in threads here on MR.

Keep your Plan Confirmation document and the original sales receipt for your Covered Equipment and your Plan. Proof of purchase may be required if there is any question as to your productʼs eligibility for Plan coverage.

they NEVER did. NEVER.
They did ask for proof of purchase only if you have problem with the registration (this is the only risk so far) or if you try to transfer the AppleCare to someone else.
Show me a single case when Apple requested a proof of purchase before doing a repair.

So what you are saying is:

Apple is only concerned with the validity of AppleCare when it doesn't cost them money, like transfers and registration (at least not much money). But when you need the laptop repaired, Apple isn't concerned with the validity of the warranty and is happy to pay money to fix your computer.

Am I getting that right? Even without evidence this doesn't not pass the logic test.

Do you actually know of a SINGLE case of revoked Applecare bought from a Powerseller ? I don't ...

I do.
Sadly it was me who had this lesson rubbed in: if the price seems to good to be true - it probably isn't.

I bought from memorymate who had a track record of over 10000 positive feedback but changed its name during the proceedings to: http://myworld.ebay.de/app.holdings/.

End of story: I had to pay twice for my AppleCare and was considering myself lucky, because Apple made the exception that they let me register my second (legit) AppleCare contract even after the normal 'one-year' timeframe.

The whole sad story is documented elsewhere in this forum.

I had a Macbook repaired TWICE under an AppleCare bought from eBay. And a Time Capsule replaced under another Applecare. This is a fact, not a guess.

It's not about money, it' s about the need for a proof of purchase by Apple if something happen (like a transfer request or problem during registration).

I do.

surely there are scammer selling false Applecare on eBay, and other selling legit Applecares that they revoke later on.

The few times I've bought AC I've done so on eBay. No probs at all. All you need is the activation code. There is nothing useful in the box, its just a marketing gimmick to make you feel like you are buying something of tangible value.

There is a registration number inside the box. Not "just marketing non sense".

They also ask for proof of purchase incase the SAME SERIAL/REGISTRATION number multiple times. That way, the rightful purchaser will retain the AppleCare they bought, whereas someone who just got a code will not.

true indeed.
But that presume you have a false Applecare

I am not saying they always ask for verification, what I am saying is that it seems foolish to believe Apple is not asking for proof of purchase when it matters.

It only seems to happen to some people and not others, so Apple likely knows which registrations are bogus. Your "facts" are nothing but your personal experiences and are worthless in this kind of discussion. The logic doesn't support your ideas.
