So first off I'd like to apologize in advance if I say anything stupid or obvious here, I'm a total novice when it comes to doing anything this complex with software even though I've used computers pretty much my whole life.
I have a 2017 13" MacBook Pro that I'd like to get Windows 10 running on via Bootcamp to expand my gaming options, and since I have the puny 121 GB model (I know, I know. It was a moving out/graduation gift from my well meaning but tech illiterate parents) I'm trying to use an external SSD to offload as much as possible from the built in storage. I've got a brand new 1TB Samsung T5 acquired specifically for this purpose.

So I've been trying to follow this article on 9to5 Mac as a guide and got pretty far along with no issues, until I got to step 19. When I open disk management in the virtual Win10 my T5 doesn't even show up, like the device isn't even there. I got to the part where it says to unplug and reconnect the drive and selected the "connect to windows" prompt from VMWare Fusion, but after that, nothing. Stopped in my tracks like a brick wall.
Any ideas on where I might've gone wrong? I know it's tough to explain a software problem like this without showing someone directly, but I'm stumped and with everyone and everything on lockdown for who knows how long getting anyone to help in person isn't an option.
A couple miscellaneous notes:
-I'm running Catalina 10.15.3 (which whittled my playable Steam library down to almost nothing, which is partly what prompted me to embark on this Bootcamp-Windows 10 boogaloo to begin with)
-My T5 is connected to the MacBook via a USB hub. Could that be the reason why the drive isn't being detected by the virtual Windows?

Again, I apologize for my painfully idiot-level computer knowledge. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Maybe I'll have better luck trying the whole process over with a different source to follow. I'll give these a shot and see if it works out.

Well I ended up just going the easier route and offloaded as much as possible from my MBP to the T5, then installed Bootcamp on the internal drive. So far it's working reasonably well...Doom 2016 worked well enough on reduced settings (I fully expected to make compromises on that front) after everything was up and running.

I was visiting family out of state when the lockdowns started, so I didn't have any of my normal console or PC gaming options with me. Having access to my Windows game library should help make these next few weeks a lot more bearable.
