I would start her on the basics though. Tell her iTunes is the only place to store music (don't debate this with anyone) and the iPod stores the music so you can take it with you wherever you go. Tell her the only way to get music on the iPod is to plug the iPod into her computer and use iTunes. Don't use words like sync. It only makes them mad.
My mom doesn't have an iPod but this is how I explained iPhoto. I said her camera's photos can only be stored in iPhoto, etc etc. I didn't use any words like sync, instead I said "transfer". You just have to go slow and be steady.
