I've done a clean install of 10.10.5 and am now trying to upgrade to High Sierra.

I'm not really sure what's happening. Is this downloading the software or installing the software?

The blue bar hasn't moved for about 4 hours. I've tried cancelling and starting again and I've tried rebooting the Mac.

Any help appreciated. I need my Mac back!

First…what model Mac are you using (to identify potential hardware issues)?

Second…you should perhaps try installing via a USB flash drive (USB key). That would eliminate the “upgrade” step you’re going through. Follow instructions here to create the USB installer. Then just boot from the USB installer, erase your hard drive and install High Sierra directly.

Here's one more vote to try installing from a bootable USB flashdrive.

What you need:
- copy of the High Sierra installer (should be in the applications folder)
- a USB flashdrive (I suggest 16gb, but 8gb might do)
- the free app "Boot Buddy":
https://sqwarq.com/boot-buddy/

Use BB to create the flashdrive installer, then...
- power down
- connect flashdrive
- boot and HOLD DOWN the option key continuously until the startup manager appears
- select flashdrive and hit return
- you should boot into the installer.

One other important suggestion:
Do you have an external backup?
If so, I would advise updating it before you do the install.
THE BEST update would be a bootable clone using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper
Both are free to download and try for 30 days.

It sounds like your Mac now is stucking at the upgrading process. You may try to shutdown (may require force shutdown in your case), then hold Command + R to go into recovery partiton. And re-install the OS from there. It should able to bring your Mac back without any data lost (if the damage is not done yet).
