Trying to install Ubuntu under Fusion - problem

I attempted to install the 64 bit version of Ubuntu on my 2008 MBP under VMware Fusion 1.1.1. The install went ok but once launched, Ubuntu just hung up. Should I install the x86 version instead? Was there something I missed in the install? Your aid is appreciated.
 
Without more information, I don't really know what the problem is.

I can tell you I have the 32-bit version working just fine in Fusion, but I don't know if you're experiencing a 64-bit problem or just something strange.
