Trying to Jailbreak and Unlock 2G

I have an original iPhone that I need to unlock. Right now the phone is not setup, so when you turn it on it just says to connect to itunes. How do I find out what software is on the phone so I can figure out what to use to jailbreak and unlock it?

What do I do if the phone is not activated and iTunes won't go to the screen to let me restore? It just goes to the "Welcome to your new iPhone" screen:

If its already restored to 3.1.3 skip to step 4 on the tutorial.
Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button.....
If its not on the latest 3.1.3 then put it in DFU mode and restore it.
