I'm trying to go from 10.6.8 to 10.10.4. The download seemed to go well, but when I click on the disc installer icon, I get this:

    Please advise. Thank you. :)

Hmm it looks like you may have just downloaded a Yosemite update, rather than the update to Yosemite.

Have you tried searching for Yosemite on the Mac App Store and downloading through that? Snow Leopard has the MAS so this'll be the easiest way.

    Step 3 from link:
"3. Upgrade to OS X Yosemite for free.
Visit the OS X Yosemite page on the Mac App Store. Click the download button, and follow the onscreen instructions to begin your upgrade."

What happened when you performed the above step 3 of the link you provided?
Make sure you click the "OS X Yosemite page" link in step 3. It opens an Apple page and automatically launches the App Store (for me). The "Download" button is in the App Store.

I agree with keyofanxiety. It looks you have the Yosemite combo updater instead of the complete installer app (app name = Install OS X Yosemite.app). The installer app will download to you Applications folder and automatically launch. If you do not want to install at that moment after the download then quit as soon as the app starts. The Install OS X Yosemite app will remain in the Applications folder until it installs then it will delete itself automatically. The complete install app is 5.68 Gb.

You need this file, not the one that you were running.

And apparently that's exactly what happened. You are most brilliant, keyofanxiety.

And to everyone else, thank you so much for your gracious help. :)

I feel like I stole something. I'm not used to getting a new OS for free.
In the past I've always had to buy the install DVD. :)
