trying to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.7.5 on an old Macbook air

Hi
I recently clean restored to factory settings an old 2012 MBA to pass it over to my son. Once it's been done i've tried to upgrade OS already with my son's apple ID. It seems i can't from APP store. Is it true?
Is there any incompatibility between the MBA and the Mac OS Sierra? Is it just the Apple ID? Even if it belongs to my family (I mean the Apple Family account).

MBA 2012 will support Sierra (10.12). Starting with Sierra, macOS is not tied to your Apple ID. Try this link to download the full Sierra (10.12.6) installer app:

Thanks but It didn't worked out. I had to upgrade to El Capitan and then it can be upgraded to either Sierra or High Sierra. That was the problem. It took me quite a while to guess.
