Somehow Apple has got to get these yield rates (leading to product shortages) under control. If that means sticking with a slightly older but more reliable technology for another generation, I'm all for it. When they can't get their product out to people, no one cares how advanced the technology is.

product shortages are all part of the game.

Won't matter if Apple doesn't make the iPhone 6 much better looking. They have been using the same faceplate since the 1st iPhone, thick bezel, just looks like an old phone.

:apple:

You're right, it won't matter... Hence why the iPhone 5s was such a sales disaster

Note that they didn't get 9 million TO customers that weekend. They simply sold that many.

The press release is here. It also noted that:

"Demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks."

True, but they always seem to wait until the last second to start building. The delay seems to be mostly about wanting secrecy. If they started too far ahead, there'd be leaks all over. :)

My recollection is part if not much of the 5s initial shortage was due to Apple under-forecasting the demand, while over-forecasting the 5c demand.

While I'd like to see it integrated in the display somehow, it's a pretty good bet the physical home button will continue on at least another generation.

Perhaps we won't get this until they implement some kind of pressure sensitive / real haptic feedback screen (like they describe in some of their patents).

so, there not gonna change it how it works ?

like the fact you can "force" retrain or something, I forget what it was, but there was a few issues where Touch ID currently would not always accept even though it was correct.

If Apple is going to be using the same technology, then it will be the same issues..

Why not bump up the tech a bit more ? That's what we all want anyway.

i suppose the next ipads will have the fingerprint scanner as well. this might be the reason they're looking to expand the production of the scanner

Exactly..with the entire entry into payment and using touch ID as a means to expedite and improve the entire expereince of going through a purchase, apple would be smart to introduce touch ID into as many devices as possible..2013 phones, and in 2014 more phones and through the entire iPad family...then they can focus on improving touch ID or embedding it into the screen..With Potential DOLLARS at stake given the rumours of them moving into the payments business it would be much better to let new technology take a back seat and rapidly standerdize the current technology into existing product lines.

It's not hard to grasp, but it has nothing to do with this article. His comment would have made more sense as a reply to the post talking about the fingerprint sensor in the 5S before it was released. We already have the 5S with a fingerprint sensor, and know that it increases security, so his comment was un-nesscessary.

He joined yesterday and only has 3 posts, and has a URL in his sig. My guess is he's spamming forums with that URL —*you see posts all the time in comment threads like "Thank you very informative article" and then their handle links back somewhere else.

Apple should have spilt the orders between TSMC and UMC. A dual supplier strategy is always safer.

This also goes to show that 450mm wafer technology is a long ways off from mainstream adoption.

Who is UMC??

Who is UMC??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Microelectronics_Corporation

UMC is best known for its merchant foundry business, manufacturing integrated circuits wafers for fabless semiconductor companies. In this role, UMC is second only to competitor TSMC.[3] It has two 300 mm fabs, one in Taiwan and one in Singapore.[2]
UMC is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol of UMC, and on the Taiwan Stock Exchange as 2303. UMC has 10 manufacturing facilities worldwide, employing 10,500 people.

i can imagine them integrating it into trackpads as well
