turn off font smoothing/antialiasing completely

    Is there a way to turn of font smoothing/antialiasing completely?

    Take a look at tinkertool. That gives you options for font smoothing.

    No.

    It's one of my major gripes about OS X since it was first released.

    With TinkerTool, you can control _some_ font smoothing, but you can't really "turn it all the way off".

    This is often more of a problem for older users with deteriorating vision than it is for the young-un's.

    Old-fashioned bitmapped fonts may indeed be "prone to the jaggies", but at small font sizes they are more readable than smoothed fonts when your vision ain't what it used to be.
