I have a macbook and pretty much have left that guy on for 3 years straight. Poor guy has had little actual downtime, doing great though. I want to know what the deal is with leaving an iMac on most or all of the time? Anything you guys know would be great. Thanks.

Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. That doesn't apply to desktops, of course, but it is very bad for your MacBook battery. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:

It won't hurt to leave your iMac on all the time.

The only time I restart/turn off my iMac is when I have to because of Software Update. My current uptime is 19 days.

my current uptime on my iMac core duo is 41 days 23 hours and a couple minutes
    my eMac's i have 4 of them and uptimes are 163 days 1 hour , 158 days 16hours , 157 days 23 hours and 125 days 5 hours
my iMac g3's uptimes are  325 days 14hours and 324 days 12 hours
doesn't harm them at all , the only thing effected by that is possibly my electricity bill

    +1.

Same here (my uptime was 19 days as well before the updates this week). I have mine set to go to sleep in 1 hour of inactivity.

My iMac has been on since September last year when I bought it - apart from reboots for new software installs.

There have been a number of threads on this subject and they all come to the conclusion to leave the machine on - even Apple recommends it!

Mine stays on excepting when going to be gone for a long time or when it needs a s/w reboot. And mine goes to sleep with me,,, errr, I mean... when I go to sleep.

    :p

Putting it to sleep. It uses much less power and is quieter (not that the iMac is loud). I have mine set so that pushing the power button on the back puts it to sleep, which I do whenever I leave the house or go to bed.

Ditto (though 'loud' wise, I was unlucky and have a loud low-bass rumbling Seagate in mine), though latterly I power down to keep my friend happy, for all the tiny amount that it sips.
