When I first got the Apple TV 4, I remember being able to activate Airplay from my macbook or iphone which would then turn on my (off) Apple TV. Now, when my Apple TV is off, the airplay option doesn't even show up on my macbook or iphone. Am I imagining this? I swore I was able to turn on my sleeping apple TV by activating airplay on another device..

After reading this, I gave it a try and turned on AirPlay on my iPad and it turned on my TV4

Mine works like this as well, maybe try restarting your apple tv, letting it go to sleep, and re trying?
[doublepost=1461689471][/doublepost]Also my old wifi would be 'sketchy' at best, apple tv was not always a visible option and then I'd notice my wifi signal come and go from the phone/ipad...I've recently upgraded to a new router from my internet provider and its there every single time now.

Try holding down the Menu and TV buttons until the LED on the Apple TV starts to flash really quickly, and then release the buttons. Your Apple TV will restart and you should be able to Airplay correctly again. Mine does this every now and then, but it's usually when I try to use the Remote App.
