What do you mean "got this far with it"? Your post is so ambiguous.

And no, we shouldn't applaud this behavior.
Opinions, opinions. My post is in direct answer to yours - it can't be that difficult to work out surely?
That butterfly keyboard, was that an example of seeing what sticks?
People/companies need to try stuff. Again, don't buy it if you don't like it - hey, don't even applaud it if YOU don't want to. Personally, and I think more will be with me and against, the reason we learn in life is because we continually try things, even things that look like they might not go anywhere. It's ALL a learning experience.

Foldable tech makes sense for tablets, not for smartphones. This thing is too bulky when folded.

I've noticed this new acceptance of foldable tablets since the Apple prototype showed up on macrumors. Sorry but a foldable phone still makes more sense to me. It's about making something more mobile. I don't need to walk around with a tablet but I do need to walk around with a smart phone.

I don't particularly like either currently as you get a crease but I support the attempt at innovation and foldables can hopefully improve. Not that I think it's a bad idea to have foldable tablets but I still think it's more beneficial for smartphones or have a smart phone that can double as a tablet when unfolded.

Not usually. Pretty much ALL Android Apps are general Apps that rely on scaling to work on larger screens. This is why Android is utter garbage on tablets (and also on Chromebooks).

Samsung has clout? Have you seen their App Store and all the glaring omissions? Or how few Apps over the years have bothered to support Samsung APIs for features that are specific to certain devices (remember the Note Edge?)?

If there’s one thing Samsung DOESN'T have is clout over developers.
They’ll throw come cash about and get a few big name apps on board. They’ve had partnerships with Microsoft, adobe and Instagram in the past.

It's a glass screen. The maker of gorilla glass on most phones, corning, just invented it. Yes, they can bend glass now.

It will be interesting to see how it performs and how long it lasts before cracking. I would think that the internal stresses on the glass have to be significant and will create micro cracks that eventually lead to full breaks - but I'm not a mechanical engineer, so perhaps they've figured out some hybrid glass / plastic material that can take the stretching / compressing.

it's difficult because you don't state what "it" is. did you mean folding tech? folding tech isn't very "far". did or did you mean "innovation"? even then, that's still not very far. so i have no clue what you're implying that's "far". and what do you mean about 1. "not my company". what does your company have to do with anything? what is your company? do you even have a company? if not, why did you even state that. incredibly ambiguous.

it's like, do you want twitter on your smart microwave? i don't. is it innovative? sure i guess, but it's definitely not something we should applaud. if we did applaud it, we're going to get facebook, amazon, ring doorbell cam right inside the microwave. that stuff is just not something we as a collective species should spend time on. it's far better to get these brilliant engineers cooking up something useful.

They’ll throw some cash around.

How did that work out for Windows Phone? Samsung has failed miserably getting developers to modify Apps for them for many years now. What makes you think things are suddenly going to change?

Reminds me of Eric Schmidt who claimed back in Dec 2011 that developers would favor Android over iOS because developers go where the market share is. It’s 2020 and it hasn’t come true yet. By Dec this year it’ll be the 10th anniversary of this comment by Eric Schmidt. Boy, that didn’t age well.

innovation doesn't mean anything if it doesn't actually take off. There has been several phones with special features. Samsung once put out a phone with a projector on the back. Guess what? No one wanted it.
Then they tried the Galaxy Round, and no one wants that either.
The Galaxy fold obviously failed, and I think this will too.
Apple has always been good at giving customers what they didn't know they wanted. The original iPad, no one actually thought it was a good idea til they started using it. Same with Apple Watch, and AirPods.
Samsung is good at throwing everything out and seeing what sticks. The Note stuck, but the Fold or the Flip will not
I don't understand what you're saying. Are you suggesting that Samsung, or any compnay, should not attempt to be innovative? That's what I'm reading here. Why are you even talking about Apple? What do they have to do with Samsung's folding phone? This is about appreciating attempts are being made. Folding screens are extremely innovative. The possibilities reach beyond the smartphone. And a glass like surface? Come on. Who cares's if it's a failure.

I understand the idea of the Fold, and it’s been something I’ve been dreaming of for a while. I wish I could have my iPhone unfold to an iPad mini.

I don’t understand this one.

Or, in Gruber’s words:

What problems does this solve? Who has a pocket that isn’t deep enough for an unfolded phone but is thick enough for this thing folded up?
You're thinking only as a male customer. Women, however, sometimes want to go out with no pockets and only a clutch purse.

And when women do have pockets, sorry Gruber, but they usually aren't very deep, so a lot of women, once the 4" phones disappeared, opted for the max size phones, since 5" phones won't fit in their pockets, they may as well have the big screen if they are going to have to put it in their handbag anyway. Thus skewing the sales figures towards max phones.

Now it is true that women's pockets also aren't very thick either, but I can see this z-phone evolving into something a lot thinner. And regardless, even as thick as it is now, I can really see this phone taking off with female customers.

A flip makes sense so a phone screen can become almost small tablet size. Nice.

But this thing? Huh? So a phone screen can become half a phone screen when folded?? For what? Mini purses for mini people?
No, just for mini purses for women in general.

Apparently Samsung have said the main target audience of this device are women.

I like it. It's like a little laptop.

You can place it on the table and still see a clock, make a FaceTime call, look at your calendar, watch a show,...

I thought this was the Motorola Razr, corporations really have to be shameless to release such similar products

IS this like fold and put in my front shirt pocket...... or..I dont want something that thick in my pants 😏
There are so many possible joke responses to this.

It’s just as similar to old samsung flip phones. There were dozens and dozens of flip phones back in the day, and they all pretty much looked the same.

folding it doesn't mean it's going to be twice as thick as a standard iPad when folded.
What else are you expecting when you fold something? To be thinner? You fold an iPad it's going to be twice as thick, not thinner.

We don't want innovation. We want improvements. This is not an improvement.
This isn't for you obviously....

Wow, I've never seen so much desire for a company to NOT do something. It's like, when this device comes out, you will be required to purchase it, and everyone is yelling "Oh the Horror". I have no intention of buying this or any folding phone tech in the near future but I love seeing the tech progress. If you think it's ugly, stupid, serves no purpose, how does it existing affect you?

If you haven’t already, I suggest you watch Jerry Rig Everything’s video on the Z Flip. The screen is NOT glass. Surprised? You shouldn’t be given Samsung’s history of distorting facts. It’s unfortunate, as the Flip does seem to be a well built folding phone, but they should have been more honest in describing what the screen was made of.

Great job Samsung on the development of your fake folding glass (FFG) screen!
