Can I watch purchased shows or movies from the Google Play Store on my laptop? I'm asking because it says watch in HD on supported Android devices.

I still don't understand. I can't download the show/movie onto my laptop and play them with for instance VLC?
I googled and found there are players, so you can watch movies on your computer AFAIK

Absolutely not. Google's content partners wouldn't be very happy with that approach :).
Why not? The movies I buy from iTunes, I copy them onto my hard drive and I can play them with QuickTime Player.

But I doubt they are without copy protection. Can you copy them to a friend's hard drive? Can that friend then play the movies on their own PC or Mac?
I'm not sure. It's on my hard drive and I watch them on my own laptop.

Apple will be employing various mechanisms to ensure the downloaded content can be played only on a device owned by (or with the account owned by) you. Personally, I prefer the Apple way (allowing download to any device that will run iTunes) as I can't rely on fast enough internet, in many of the places I do business.

You can watch them in chrome on a computer but it's only in 480p, which is ridiculous.

No you can't because they have DRM. I have loads of stuff I've bought on iTunes over the years and I tried to convert and move them across to my android devices but I couldn't.

iTunes-downloaded movies can play in QuickTime because Quicktime essentially acts as the media player backbone for iTunes, and that includes the same DRM key. So on any authorized computer, Quicktime can play those TV shows/movies without iTunes open as well. But it's not transferrable.

Stream it to your laptop or TV via HDMI or Miracast tongle which is better then Chromecast as it doesn't need a WiFi connection.

Only 480p?? Seriously?

Thanks all for the replies. I won't be buying any shows or movies from the Play Store. iTunes is better for that kind of stuff.
