Surprised nobody complains about tvOS that much. Would love to see support for the files app/icloud drive so I can browse for videos and music for starters. Of course with Apple they probably won’t support mkv files like their terrible Quicktime player.

I can see them starting off the event with something small like a new Apple TV or new HomePod (both rumored), before proceeding to announce the new Apple Watch and iPhone models.

It's been speculated that the reason TVOS wasn't discussed at all during this year's WWDC is because they want to announce the new features with a new product.

But we shall see.

Tipically there are several years between each Apple TV iteration. The last model was released in 2021, so introducing another one so soon would break that pattern.

But indeed, we shall see.

Normally I would agree, but the 2021 Apple TV had 2018 tech (A12 with 3GB RAM) and felt like it had been shelved for at least a year before being released (when there was only a 2 year gap between the 4th and 5th gen Apple TV).

Unfortunately the current rumor is the next Apple TV will have A14 with 4GB RAM, which is 2020 tech, but at least it would be another small step forward. I’m holding out hope for something like M1, but trying not to disappoint myself.

TVOS is not as processor hungry as iPad OS!

No doubt. But it also plays Apple Arcade games and hopefully other high end games with an improved processor and added RAM.

Of course the M1 is more of a want than a true prediction. Apple seems to have a lot of hesitancy when it comes to taking any big steps forward with that product.

Who cares about games!!!!

That’s very narrow minded, you might not but there’s plenty out there that do.
I quite like the odd game myself, and as they’re included in the Apple One subscription gives even more choice to try out some different ones.

The guy who says he plays games cares about games. No one cares that you don't play games
Yes but this is NOT the primary purpose of the ATV. If you want games get a PlayStation or Xbox. The AppleTV is primarily a streaming device.

No one is claiming games are the primary purpose of the device.

Apple tried to make games on the Apple TV a thing before. The fact is, there is just no demand.
It’s definitely a niche area outside the iPhone and iPad, aka mobile devices. The Mac isn’t considered a gaming device and the Apple TV never really got there either.

It’s wasted potential if you ask me, but I’m not a business person and have no idea if it makes sense for them financially to amp up gaming on the Apple TV (including a gaming controller and/or equipping it with more sufficient processing power).

Remember... At one point Apple was never in the music business, and look where they are now. Take a trip down memory lane when the iPod was announced and read comments from all the "haters" thinking the iPod was dumb and would fail. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apples-new-thing-ipod.500/

They also weren't in the phone business, and look where they are now. Same goes for the Apple Watch and a few other of their products and services. People have been saying the same things over and over.

It'd be foolish to say Apple will never be good in the gaming business. Maybe they will...maybe they won't, but some things to keep in mind:
  • Games account for about 70% of the App Store's revenue. (link)
  • Apple ranks third in gaming revenue compared to other global companies, putting them behind Sony and ahead of Microsoft, Google, and Nintendo. (link)
  • Apple is expanding controller support in iOS/iPadOS/tvOS 16 and macOS Ventura to include more types of controllers, such as Nintendo's Joy-Con and Pro Controller, and steering wheels. So they definitely care about gaming.
Based on all this, I think Apple will keep pushing for games, especially if their VR headset becomes a reality. Who knows...maybe the VR headset will be paired with the Apple TV.
