Rebooting my Apple TV after updating to tvOS 17.1, lots of apps now show a cloud icon next to their name. tvOS basically offloaded some of them even though the option on settings always stayed off for me. What gives?

What size storage to you have, and also do you have a lot of games on your ATV?

32 GB and only one game installed. But available storage in my Apple TV has always been stable so I’m really confused. Slightly less than 5GB available at the moment, after downloading the offloaded apps

How recently have you accessed any of the offloaded apps? I have seem apps get offloaded if they haven't been launched in a while.

I should have also asked about Aerial Screen Savers, as there are so many of them now, and they take up a lot of space.

If you update the OS, but there is not enough room for the update, the OS may make room buy offloading apps.

I had this happen to me with a previous tvOS update when I went from tvOS12 to tvOS 14, although for me, the OS offloaded apps that were no longer available in the tvOS App Store, causing me to lose a lot of good games, some that I paid for.

All was left of the apps was white icons with some design on it, and the name of the app was still under the icon.

I can understand the confusion. Storage on tvOS is a little weird, and the OS does not handle it very well.

All the utility apps that show you the used and available storage as well as Xcode are inaccurate. Well, they are kind of.

It is due to how tvOS handles temporary cached data and Aerial Screen Savers, both are included in "used" storage, but both are supposed to be freed up when the available storage starts to run low.

For example, if you have 2GB free available storage, and go to download a 4GB app, the OS is supposed to trash cached data and Aerial Screen savers to free up space for the new app.

But it doesn't always work.

Also, deleting apps should free up space to download additional app, but again, it doesn't always work.

Shouldn’t those be available among your purchased list to be downloaded at will?
