(I may be jumping to wild conclusions here, but do you think maybe he likes Facebook?)
I choose this comment to reply to because it's so provocative, but really it's not personal, it's aimed at any of the people who have piled into here just to have a dig at Twitter and the people who use it. (An example of trolling if I ever heard one)
So you enjoy Facebook and don't see the point of Twitter. Good for you. I have a Facebook account myself, rarely use it for various reasons, but don't see it as a reason to go butting into threads about it, ranting about it and demanding that people who use it should justify their choice and then putting them down at every point.
Presumably you have a Mac. What do you think of PC users who barge into Mac threads/forums demanding to know why, and then they answer every point with "Which is done just as easily through a zillion other ways, such as a PC"? You (again I include various others in this thread too who may or may not be trolling) are doing the same sort of thing here.
(Either that or you have an iPhone or iPod, in which case "such as a Nokia N97" or "such as a Creative Zen" could be possible substitutions)
FWIW, I use Twitter for:
* The demographic who choose to use it i.e. fellow geeks - both the random and interesting, and the famous (Stephen Fry etc)
* The fact that users are limited to expressing themselves in 140 characters, preventing long rambling yawners like this post I'm writing now, and encouraging Quality over Quantity
* The peaceful simplicity of it. Nobody poking me, biting me, bombarding me with quizzes, offering me virtual animals and vegetables etc. Not that I have anything against people who enjoy all that stuff.
* The fact that, to cut a long story short (less itemised data being taken, general attitude of the company that runs it) they're not quite so cynically in-your-face about violating basic privacy and harvesting every scrap of information they can about its users. Which is my main gripe with Facebook. But again, not everyone is concerned about this and to each his own. That's the way grown-ups handle these differences in what we enjoy.
Also to answer the stereotyping from the various anti-Twitter trolls ITT, it's only for people who say pointless things like "I'm going to the loo" or "having tea" if those are the people you choose to follow. Sure there are plenty of those people, but for every 10 there's a gem worth 20 of them and worth following.
