Only if the cables can be managed nicely

I like the idea, IF you can turn the connectors side straight down and combine with a nice cable management module possibly with TB2 and USB3 pass through. Otherwise this is just a gimmick with cable standing out on the side of it.

Anything for a dollar...

Everything about this is stupid.

It takes up MORE room on your desk.

It prevents proper thermal cooling as it was designed to be vertical.

Cables will look like crap.

It costs 60 dollars!!!

Just because you can... Doesn't mean you should.

Design and market a product some people might actually want or post misinformed opinion that no one wants? ;)

Seems Twelve South have created a product purely for the sake of saying they have.

This takes a product that has a small footprint and small scale as one of its selling points and actually increases the footprint whilst creating something that would sit awkwardly.

The fact they have to mention the Apple Tech Note shows theyve had to justify the product after the fact.

Bizarre.

What's bizarre are public forums. Look, life's hectic. Maybe your really important. Or really busy. Hell, maybe both! I get it. For those that didn't take the 15 seconds to read the entire MR article, nor the additional 5 seconds to click thru to Twelve South's site, know there are two large headlines clearly indicating a couple of Twelve South's main influences behind designing, manufacturing and marketing this new product. Spoiler alert: one of them was not just to create a "product purely for the sake of saying they have."

"Mac Pro is built to go horizontal"
Here, Twelve South references Apple's own documentation indicating the Mac Pro was designed and built to function both vertically and horizontally. "Why horizontally" I can hear you ask? Insert large headline number two...

"Crafted with professional studios in mind"
Here, Twelve South highlights their focus on the professional studio (audio or other) where vertical space is a consideration for those that have their studio gear rack mounted. If none of that makes sense, fear not - Twelve South has considered your wallet as well. The "I don't run a professional studio but do like customization and/or options" segment is (I suspect) a larger market than pro studio (another reason that Twelve South opted to create this product). But if nothing to this point has addressed your personal need, then you fall into the "not for me" customer segment. The unique characteristic of this customer segment, is that it is split into two distinct sub segments:
1) the virtually silent "not for me, I'm out" group
2) the very vocal and often impassioned "not for me and I lack the capacity to understand how it could appeal to anyone so I'm going to login and let everyone know how I feel about it" group (my personal favorite)
Obviously, Twelve South is not interested in this customer segment.

While I can't speak on the build quality of any of Twelve South's offerings, this offering seems as founded in tangible purpose as any in their catalogue. And like all of their offerings to date, this one is also not for me. But... I am glad to see a solution for some. Keep it rollin', Twelve South.

Cheers.

Why does this even exist.

If a professional studio needed a bank of these then they'd put it in a custom made rack not have a bunch of these on a shelf. As for home use as it is depicted in the photo, that is even more ridiculous, plus all the cable connections would be coming out the bottom and therefore bent at right angles.

Looks nice I guess, until you plug anything in. At that point you'll see cables sprouting out of the top of the horizontal Mac Pro.

It's Holding It Wrong

This looks really nice.....until you plug ANYTHING in. Doesn't look like there is much clearance at all underneath for connectors, and they'll look terrible coming out of the top or side!

But it does make it look thinner.

I bought a BookArc for my MBP and it looked like a dogs breakfast with the cords plugged in. I ended up selling it to some poor sod and got a Henge Dock instead. There's a reason they photoshop the cords out.

why are you looking at your mac pro while using it? you aren't. put it in a drawer, or behind your cool display.

and yes, I agree, this product is useless

First world solution to a first world problem.
But hey, point it towards your face and you have an instant face warmer in winter!

(point away during summertime to ensure your lovely cables are in full view to give you confidence that you have plugged that USB cable in the right way).

How to make your own rack shelf for the trash can

-Buy a rack shelf, (4) 1/4-20 bolts, nuts, and rubber tips
-Drill 4 holes into shelf spaced appropriately to keep trash can from rolling
-Insert bolts, fasten in place with nuts and apply rubber tips
-Orient the trashcan onto the bolts

*Tip: if you'd like to make the cables exit the bottom, cut a hole in the shelf for them before you mount the bolts. Also, different lengths of bolts can change your orientation (mortar vs cannon).

Remember to ensure plenty of airflow space around the trash can, as well as cable slack if you intend to move the trash can.

Honestly, you could do this with any existing shelf on your furniture and save about $50 off this crappy metal stand.

Suffice to say, OldSchoolMacGuy does not like this idea at all. :)

It is a solution where no problem existed. The footprint seems larger now and the whole design is cute until you plug cables into it. I do not own, nor do I intend to own, a new Mac Pro myself, but I can't see why I'd want to lay it down.

Twelve South has made some great products but this one seems to be a pointless endeavor.

All the people spouting off about how you shouldn't run the Mac Pro horizontally have obviously failed to read the manual, which quite clearly states that you can and still be happily in warranty.

For all the people slamming this company for making something you don't see a need for, wind your necks in. You might not like it but others do. As someone else said, better that somebody has an idea and takes it to market than sits on the internet all day trashing others that do!

In terms of usage, you could always cut a hole in the desktop (if the design allows) where you plan to locate the Mac. Then it really would look like a wireless Mac Pro!

A giant cupholder would be perfect. It would be nice to be able to find a way put fake flowers in this $7000 iVase without messing with the airflow.

Winter is coming (excuse the unintended GoT pun) and this will be great to blow warm air at you and save some pennies on your heating bill ...

Wow. This new stand is beautifully designed - it makes the desktop look so tidy by the way it hides all those ugly cables coming out of the Mac Pro!
