I love that they made this future proof. I got one of the original BookArcs and continued to use it up until I got my M1 Pro.
Why didn't you buy an insert for your new MBP?

I understand people use their MacBook this way to save desk space, but why not just get an iMac or Mac mini? Or Mac Studio for more power?
Because my work issued me a MacBook Pro, and I take it into the office 50% of the time. At home, using it vertically in a stand like this (beside my desk actually), and a single magnetic Thunderbolt 4 cable to my Studio Display means a very fast and easy way to use the MacBook at home and on the go.

I like the original BookArc, that is hideous.

Glad I went with this as it is adjustable.

I just bought my 3rd one of these. Rock solid and still looks brand new after years of use.

Wait, why would someone want to buy a MacBook and then buy an external monitor, external mouse, external keyboard, and use it this way? Why not just get an iMac if a desktop computer is needed?
Since that may not be the only place you use it. I have such a setup at home but also work at my girlfriend’s place a lot. And I travel, so I want a computer I can bring with me and work on a train/plane/in a hotel room. When I’m working from my home or my girlfriend’s home, 99% of the time I’m using an external 4K monitor, mechanical keyboard, and external mouse, but it’s nice to be able to take my computer with me wherever I go.

1) there is no M3 max mac mini/mac studio or 27"+ imac

2) you can take it with you when you travel, i would use it as a desktop most of the year but travel for a month+ each year and can just bring the whole "desktop" with me without needing 2 computers, to use overseas or on the planes.

I had the original BookArc. They stopped making any inserts for that one a long time ago. I couldn't even get a new insert for it for my 2016 MBP, but continued using it anyway. My laptop would fit loosely and lean to one side, but it worked well enough because the tbMBPs were so light.

I work out of my home and I still like the option of being able to move around to wherever I please. I don't want to be stuck in my office all the time.

I once had a two machine setup where I had a classic Mac Pro and a MBP for portability. It was a constant headache to keep my files organized. I can't tell you the number of times I showed up for a meeting only to realize the file I wanted was still on my tower or the number of times I was late for an appointment because I had to wait to copy a huge folder to my MBP from my Mac Pro.

Once the MBP got powerful enough to be my only computer, I ran with it and love having options.

This is really awesome because I have two Windows laptops from work and a MacBook Air that are all different sizes. I’ve been look for a solution like this and I don’t think I’ve seen anything as cool as that chrome design.

Twelve South today announced the launch of the BookArc Flex, a new stand designed for MacBooks that are used in clamshell mode while connected to a display.

twelve-south-bookarc-flex.jpg

The BookArc Flex has a unique build that features a two legs connected by a flexible interior piece. A laptop is placed in the middle on the flexible part, which pulls the legs together to secure it upright using the weight of the laptop.

Twelve South says that the design was inspired by the Noisette Creek Pedestrian Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina. The bridge has two steel arches that are indeed similar to the design of the BookArc Flex.

We were able to test the BookArc Flex ahead of its launch, and while the design works well, it is important to ensure the laptop goes directly in the center of the stand. It's not difficult to do, and placing the laptop correctly ensures that it remains secure. If it's not placed in the center, however, it can shift out of place, though a misalignment is quickly noticeable.

The construction of the BookArc Flex allows it to work with laptops of multiple sizes without different inserts, and it is compatible with the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from Apple. The slim size of the BookArc Flex ensures that it does not take up too much room on a desk, and it tucks a MacBook out of the way when used in clamshell mode.

Twelve South's BookArc Flex is priced starting at $50 it is available today from the Twelve South website.

I for one, I use their earlier product still. Why? Because my employers get me portable laptops that I can take to work, travel and wherever I need to go. And at home it's nice to use it with external stuff. Heck, that's how many people use the laptops at the office too, lid closed and connected to external display and inputs.

After quickly burning through tre MBPs (Intel i7 and i9) in clamshell mode and cooking them real good with swollen batteries, RAM issues and random kernel panics I've been weary of clamshell mode and kept my M1 16" (2021) lid-open.
Since Apple Silicon doesn't have the heat issues as Intel I guess I should use it in clamshell mode more because I find it so stupid you cannot turn off the internal monitor and only use the external monitor.
