The scary thing is that they are demanding your phone number now when you sign up. Nearly all of the bigger social media sites are doing this...

Well, in all honesty, is there anyone, who is happy with Twitter targeting options for ads? I've tried using them several times but found that unless you're advertising to really wide audience, it is very difficult to find relevant interests in Twitter ads.

So if Twitter does not rely on Apple's device ID, then does that mean that they are fingerprinting based on user IP, IMEI, MAC address or other hardware tags?
The article said Twitter does not rely *heavily* on device ID, which is why the change will cause them *less* pain than it does to Facebook, Google, etc. Nuances matter.

If you want a more reliable way for privacy protection. Always install uBO or AdGuard on all of your devices and browsers. Stay away from AdBlock, AdBlock Plus, or uBlock.
The problem with AdGuard is that *they* see ALL of your traffic, which means you really have to trust them.

This is why I prefer ad blockers in Safari and Little Snitch system wide, because that way, all the filtering happens locally on my machine instead of on someone else's servers.

I wonder how successful Safari's anti-fingerprinting technology is compared to other browsers.

Me too. Hopefully someone does a comprehensive study to compare them soon.

How about tracking them by the Twitter user account they are logged into? People might reveal enough about them by what they tweet, whom they follow and which tweets they like such that Twitter doesn't need to much cross-platform tracking.

Can someone ELIA5 why Twitter is getting flak here? Like besides the general fact that all these companies suck, I feel like Twitter is basically saying they are fine with Apple trying to protect users data? I got impression from this they are saying they aren't as mercilessly reliant on personal data as Facebook so will deal with it as it comes.

Seems like Twitter knows what they're doing...

Ya, but then they still are a social site.. To me, that comes first... How do we know this is only to please users now, then when everyone seems happy, they silently do the same as FB ? Is better for companis to do that kind of thing anyway if your goal is the same as another social site... We don't know whats their plans are long-term.

May as well be cautious now

I was forced to give my phone number to Samsung just to configure my soundbar with their stupid app (their excuse is 2FA, which is wildly impractical in my case as my phone number changes roughly once every 3-4 years).

The app also forced me to set Location to "always". I am THIS close to reporting them to Apple.

Except Apple also needs a phone number now too when signing up for an AppleiD once you hit OSX Sierra and above.

Anyway, you can't blame for what a service demands or changes, based on where you use it.. It Twitter app was on Google app store discussion, we'd have much less of an issue i bet with location info on twitter... but we only say this because its with Apple.

"Twitter" itself always stays the same, yet have different views based on which device we use it on. Perhps were attacking this from the wrong angle ...
