One time I was bored and played along. I asked them what my IP address was if they detected an issue. Of course they couldn't tell me but he kept trying to convince me he was legit even though it was clear I wasn't buying it.

Yeah I did follow along with them a few times using a Windows virtual machine. They wanted me to go to a web site used for giving someone control of your computer (like fixing your grandma's email). That's when I told them they had connected to an FBI office and we were tracking him. (click)

Was it just me or it is actually baffling to hear that their employees were victims of a phone spear phishing attack, which somehow gave the hackers access to Twitter's "internal tool"?

This is just bizarre.........

"Hack The Planet!" , Social engineering in 2020...This was cheesy even for the year 1995 when the movie Hackers was released... Kevin Mitnick would be proud.

Apparently it was 3 kids. Twitter has some 'splaining to do about how easy it is to breach an account.

"The suspects include a 19-year-old British man from Bognor Regis, a 22-year-old man from Orlando, Florida, and a teenager from Tampa, Florida.

The 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday in Tampa, authorities said, where the Hillsborough state attorney’s office will prosecute the case. He faces 30 felony charges, according to a news release.

Two others were arrested on Friday on charges relating to the hack. Another accomplice, 22-year-old Nima Fazeli, was charged with aiding and abetting the intentional access of a protected computer.

A third suspect, a 19-year-old named Mason Sheppard who went by the moniker “Chaewon” online, was arrested in the United Kingdom and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and the intentional access of a protected computer."

Yeah I also read the follow up article. But this just makes it even more ridiculous to even think about........ Like, why was the internal tool not even a separate tool/software in the first place......?

Gosh this is just baffling.......

I worked in a hospital servicing the medical devices. One of my (numerous) jobs there was tending to the carts that held the patient's drugs for the day. Each bin was locked but since I did the service they gave me a master key that could manually open all the bins. That master key probably should have been held by a supervisor but they either trusted me (I'm very trustworthy) or were too dim to see the consequences.
Companies that hold our data or have access to the "keys" need to be less casual with who can do what.

Bizarre that Twitter employees have an internal tool that gives them permission to post in your name on your Twitter accounts. What if Twitter decided to commandeer all those millions of fake or dormant accounts to manipulate or misinform the public?what if they already do this to some extent? And how much editorial power do they have to control what is allowed to ‘trend’ in a positive or negative light? Social engineering should be regulated otherwise it belongs to the highest bidders and advertisers. We’ve already seen how these platforms can be gamed with dark money to cause division and harm.

It doesn't appear that that's the case.
