Twitter today announced it's launching "Twitter Circle," its new feature that allows users to share tweets, photos, videos, and more with only select users they choose.

The feature had been in testing since May and allows users to create a custom group with up to 150 accounts and share tweets with only those users rather than publicly.
With Twitter Circle, people now have the flexibility to choose who can see and engage with their content on a Tweet-by-Tweet basis. This makes it easier to have more intimate conversations and build closer connections with select followers.
Twitter Circle is rolling out today for users on iOS, Android, and the web.

Instead of me-too features like this to compete with messaging networks, I think Twitter should go back to its microblogging roots and change its whole model in one go.

My ‘less is more’ proposal:
  • 2 dollars/month basic subscription to be able to post, tied to a credit card.
  • No ads or recommendations; chronological posts only.
  • Remote quote-tweets and native RTs, so people have to contextualise things they like or want to comment on. Remove badges.
This would kill bots, and cut out the gamification and status games and wankery. With the kind of people who are already on the platform, you’ll have high signal and low noise.

Those are all good proposals, but I think you could simplify even further:

shut it down.

Would love to see #2 happen.

This is essentially creating groups "Hey be in my exclusive circle" etc. etc.

Twitter becoming as Twitter as Instagram is Instagram.

Instead of removing bots, suspending people that are doing bad things, they are making a bigger echo-chamber and letting rule-breakers get rewarded with a blue checkmark. No wonder Twitter's been on the decline for the last few years.

Im glad this is rolling out to everyone finally. I don’t understand the complaints. Don’t like twitter..don’t use it. Have a feature suggestion..contact twitter. Don’t come to a macrumors thread with the whining 😂

I am actually sorry to hear about the toxicity of Twitter on the western globe. Here on the eastern side, I connect with my friends via Twitter. We talk about daily stuff, we share drawings, we meet new people and make friends. I am glad I created a Twitter account. It made my life more interesting.

This is great I can specify which bots can see what I'm sharing!
