Twitter appears to be testing a new "dislike" or thumbs down button for tweets, which is designed to let people downvote replies. Twitter says that the feature is available for "some" iOS users.

The dislike button is visible to the person who is viewing tweets, but it is not a publicly available metric or visible to the author of the tweet. The thumbs down option will allow a tweet reply to be downvoted.

Twitter says that it is an internal tool that is designed to help Twitter understand what people think is valuable to a conversation.

There is no word on whether this is a feature that Twitter plans to roll out to everyone in the future, and for now, it is limited to a select number of users.

Ashton Kutcher suggested this just a few days ago as a means to help prevent so much hate and vile spewing on the platform. Just put a downvote and move on.

You know, MacRumors used to have a dislike button too. Perhaps that would help get this site back to the way it used to be many years ago too. Just a simple dislike and move on. I guess technically it has a dislike button now, but it’s hidden behind a like button. UI matters!

It’s a good first step but the downvotes should be public. Its much more difficult to spread misinformation on platforms with public downvotes like Reddit.

I'm on Reddit (Apollo FTW) and Twitter regularly. I look for the dislike/downvote button on Twitter regularly. They would definitely be able to give me a more personalized/accurate Explore/For You page if it existed.

twitter copies reddit. instagram copies Facebook who copies instagram who copies tik tok... apple or Bezos or Zuckerberg or jack or whoever should just buy them all and dispense with this fragmented social media world. and then we'll get new upstarts and can start the cycle over again.

Oh no! Facebook had it and they got rid of it long time ago. It’s too late Twitter.
Never too late.

Makes no sense to like a post you don’t actually like right? FB removed it because it allows truth to shine through, and they know too many downvotes can was to too many people not getting their serotonin addiction from likes that’ll leave their platform.

Agreed. Macrumor’s like button is also terrible to use on mobile since the like button gets treated as text and gets highlighted when you long press to bring it up. Still, I’m glad it’s at least here and will affect the like count.

Down-voting will do nothing except add gasoline to the dumpster fire that is twitter.
This should go well.

Edit: I mean... Why offer Like/Dislike buttons at all? Is there a prize for Most Liked Tweet 2021? And if so, on what level could that possibly matter?
