Apple's upcoming revamped Apple TV will support a full App Store, and TechCrunch has shared some details on one of the first third-party apps that will be available for the device. According to the site, live video streaming service Periscope is building an app for the Apple TV, which will likely allow users to watch content streamed from the Periscope iOS app.

We don't have a specific unveiling or launch date for Periscope on Apple TV. Twitter and Periscope did not respond to our inquiry before press time. The app might be previewed in tomorrow's Apple keynote to show off the potential of the Apple TV software development kit. Apple wants to get developers' minds swirling with ideas for what they could build.
Periscope, owned by Twitter, is an app that allows users to capture and broadcast live video streams. Currently, Periscope videos can be watched solely on the web and through smartphones using iOS and Android apps, but with an expansion to the Apple TV, video streams will be available natively on larger screens for the first time.

Apple's revamped Apple TV will debut tomorrow, at the company's iPhone-centric September 9 event to be held at the Bill Graham Civic Center. Along with a full App Store that will include both apps and games, the new set top box will include deep Siri and search integration, a touch-based motion-enabled remote control, an A8 processor, and additional storage space.

Apple's event will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time tomorrow morning. MacRumors will have live coverage both on MacRumors.com and through our MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

probably not, but lets hope that they at least force users to record landscape and not portrait so it doesn't look terrible on a Television.

Will it be a Periscope-watching app or a Periscope-broadcasting app? (And hopefully this also means they'll quit making Periscope videos portrait-only.)

Why would they need to write an app just to let you stream stuff from the iOS app? That's just "AirPlay".
Exactly. Not saying an Apple TV app would be completely devoid of value, but the whole point of Periscope is watching something as it happens.

I would frankly prefer them to offer much longer archive option AND improve scalability. Most of the time, I can't even see the popular stream.

Too bad that most (all?) of these videos are shot in portrait mode. Maybe Apple will announce an actual TV set that can rotate to accommodate.

A big part of Periscope is interacting with the broadcaster. I hope they include a way of sending messages (possibly with the phone) and that it's not just for viewing. Currently, you can view live Periscope streams on a web browser but with no ability to interact, which is rather pointless in many cases.

Please, NO!!!

Vertical Video Syndrome (VVS) must be eradicated and Periscope sure doesn't help. It looks horrible on anything other than a phone.

Stop VVS now!

There's actually something I've grown to hate even more than portrait mode videos... and that is portrait mode videos converted by morons to landscape, such that they cannot be viewed natively even on devices that support screen rotation. At that point they look horrible no matter what screen you view them on.

Why would they need to write an app just to let you stream stuff from the iOS app? That's just "AirPlay".

I don't think they are streaming from the iOS app directly. As I read it this is an AppleTV app that will act as its OWN client to be able to receive video streamed from other users' Periscope app on their iOS devices.

Does that mean the apple tv will have a camera on it?

No. Your TV may or may not have a camera built into it. The AppleTV box won't have a camera as it wouldn't make sense for most any users since the box sits typically in your entertainment center or behind a cabinet. The periscope app would be for viewing content not creating it as that's what the phone in your pocket would be for.

Things like this are interesting. It doesn't necessarily have to be Periscope, but after major events, people using social media seem to be the first to give us immediate information. What if one day you're turning on your Apple TV to access Periscope or other services like it for breaking news after a disaster/attack/other?

As Apple TV usage and uses grow exponentially, even just having options like this are fascinating. Of course, try explaining that to people..

I wonder what sort of restrictions there will be on apps that can run on the new Apple TV.

I imagine anything that can be used to play formats that pirates use, like MKV files, will be denied right off the bat.

Apps that compete directly with Apple's own services may have a hard time too. This will be a brand new platform, so Apple will be able to set a difficult standard for app approval without having to deal with a lot of "But we could do this before, why not anymore?"

The resolution for Periscope is awful, and I'm not sure blowing that up on a larger screen is going to be optimal for anyone. Plus, a lot of times people rush to get into a stream so they can make comments, so I'd rush for my phone first over turning on the TV.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Apple TV had a built in camera. Especially with HomeKit integration, it'd make sense. You could use it to check in on your house, to FaceTime, to take pictures of a large group and be able to frame the photo on your TV, etc.

Periscope is a great way to catch concerts. Even though it's lo-fi, it's still better than nothing.
