Why would they need to write an app just to let you stream stuff from the iOS app? That's just "AirPlay".

That's not what this would do. I think there's a weird game of telephone happening here. TechCrunch said, "broadcasted from Twitter’s Periscope app." Which Macrumors translated to "watch content streamed from the Periscope iOS app."

This will all be done natively with no connection to a phone, because obviously. I think MR added a word that made TC's slightly confusing statement even more confusing, to the point of your question. :)

I wonder if the new Apple TV with have a notification system from apps like Periscope. (handled in a way that isn't insanely distracting from the content...) Or Picture in picture to enable browsing while viewing content.

Maybe Chatroulette? :p

OMG!! I'm soooo addicted to this App. Can't wait for it to come to Apple TV! YAY!

Any word on if the current generation Apple TV will also support the app store?

My hunch is on no but it’s possible in theory I would think to patch it in. Maybe an app store but with more limited options regarding what apps can be used? Obviously games and stuff are out but streaming services should be possible.

I wonder what sort of restrictions there will be on apps that can run on the new Apple TV.

I imagine anything that can be used to play formats that pirates use, like MKV files, will be denied right off the bat.

Apple allows plenty of video players on the app store for iPhone/iPad that play back MKV, so not sure why you'd make that assumption. You're expressing the same viewpoint as the RIAA/MPAA that it's the technology that should be illegal, not what you do with it.

You know pirates release content in AAC and M4V -- better block playback of those too, Apple!
Oh, wait.

What's really interesting is that lately there has been some media coverage of people using Periscope to stream video from major sporting events against the rightsholder's (NFL/MLB) wishes. These streams are coming from individual users so it's not as easy as blocking a domain name. Wonder how it will play out when people can fire up the AppleTV and see the boxing via Periscope without having to order that PPV instead.

I've seen some of those broadcasts you speak of and the quality leaves much to be desired. I just don't think it's that much of a threat but we'll see how that is to be handled I guess.

from what i have heard its a view only app.

hopefully they will do something about the comments etc totally covering up the screen for some videos. I deleted the app cause that was ridiculous
You do know that you can hide chat don't you?

How do you like it so far? I'm debating on getting that or the nest.

Great so far! I also ran some more wire to be able to manage my humidifier setting. BTW- if your humidifier is controlled with 2 wires like mine, Nest won't be able to manage it out of the box. I also bought some extra sensors to put in my office and bedroom, which are always hotter in the summer than the rest of the house. The ecobee is better than Nest because it is Homekit enabled (Nest is not), it monitors the temp in more than one room and you can set whether the other rooms are always taken into account or only when people are in them (the sensors have motion detection, too). I can manage the settings remotely with my computer, iPhone and Watch and I assume I'll be able to voice command the new TV to change the settings, too. After a month of use, I'll be able to go to the website and view the history of my HVAC use and see how efficient my equipment is. I've also seen a bunch of testimonials on YouTube and forums where professional HVAC people say the ecobee is way better. Besides, it's NOT Google ;)

Running the extra humidifier lines and figuring out how to wire it up at the furnace was the hard part of the install. I even had to install the power extended that comes with the ecobee because I only have a 4-wire thermostat line. Otherwise, it was a matter of swapping out the old thermostat and setting it up. You can even use your iPhone to set up its wifi connection and establish an account at ecobee.com to enable remote operating and keeping the HVAC history. Couldn't have been easier!

For me I'm in intrigued with HomeKit integration. Already invested heavily in the Hue system so lets see if integration finally happens with the Apple TV being the hub.

how much of a delay is on this periscope stuff? could apple TV be inviting risqué 'un-apple' content?

Does that mean the apple tv will have a camera on it?

The whole point of using Periscope would be catch some live event on your portable device. What would be interesting to Periscope from your living room? Even if you wanted to have a video call with grandma, it would not make sense to Periscope it - there's FaceTime or Skype for that.
